Quiet Vacationing the New 'Under-the-Radar' Trend in the Workplace

A video trended on Instagram during the last two weeks of a female professional who mistakenly turned on her camera for a virtual work meeting while on a beach vacation.

Although, like most things seen on the internet in recent times, one cannot determine if it was staged or authentic.

This brings us to the term 'Quiet Vacationing', another concept following quiet quitting (opting out from tasks beyond one’s assigned duties and job descriptions and/or becoming less psychologically invested in work) and then quiet firing (subtly pushing an employee to quit by making their work environment increasingly uncomfortable or unappealing, rather than directly firing them).

It is another negative workplace trend score from employees against employers which involves taking time off without officially using their vacation days.

However, this trend appears to be more common among white-collar workers who have less micromanaging managers - where workers rely on a few well-timed calls and emails to keep up the appearance of being productive.

To throw in some statistics - a recent Harris Poll found that 28% of employed adults have participated in this practice.

This is despite the common practice by most organisations, which encourages employees to bring their authentic selves to work and openly communicate personal needs; this trend reveals that many people still prefer to keep their strategies for managing the daily grind private.

There may be several reasons employees engage in this activity, which may accurately reflect individuals' private lives. However, this piece is simply to bring the topic to light and to keep the conversation going about some workplace practices.

Many thanks for reading my perspective and giving feedback.

My fervent wish is for the personal growth of everyone and the success of all young professionals who put their hearts and souls into finding their purpose in life.
