Quiet Quitting, Quiet Promotions, Bold Actions: Taking Charge of Your Work Life

Quiet Quitting, Quiet Promotions, Bold Actions: Taking Charge of Your Work Life

Can I be honest with you? I am sick and tired of people complaining about their jobs. And I hear it a lot because I spend so much time with people just like you at conferences and organizations where I present. Let me be clear, it is not the complaining that pisses me off. It is the lack of action and inability to take charge of your life that irks me the most! We’re forced to quiet quit, we get quiet promotions which entail more work and no more pay.

There is a distinct advantage to aging. We’ve seen more, we’ve learned more, and we’ve lived more personally and professionally. Looking back 10 years ago, you’ll notice a different you. You’ve aged, you’ve learned, and you’ve lived.

If I’ve piqued your interest, please read on because I am going to drop 5 things you need to do this week to move forward and get out of your way.

1-Stop being afraid to take charge.

Ask yourself what’s the worst that could happen? Often, it is not as dire as we think. Removing fear invigorates the mind, embraces your soul with endless possibilities and gives you the opportunity to take charge of your life. It’s YOUR life, not your manager’s, boss’, company’s. It is your life! The only person that has a right to tell you what to do for a living is you!

2-Take charge: Commit to an action plan and date.

If you’re stuck and in need of a job change then you need to commit to taking action. After all, it’s your life, your career and a lot of this takes guts, strength and focus. No biggie, because you’ve done this before. That’s how you landed your current/past job, and you’ll need to put in the effort to leave and find another, more suitable job.

3- Set goals and stick with them.

If your goal is to get the hell out of there asap, then you need to write this down. You’ll want a timeline, an exit strategy (where are you going, another company, self-employed, etc.) and be proactive with your job search knowing that it can take 1-12 months or more to land another gig. Look at your goals daily to take charge of your work life.

The late, great tennis star, Arthur Ashe said, “Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can.”

Estée Lauder said, “I never dreamt of success. I worked for it.”

Personally, I’ve learned that taking charge ain’t easy, but it is necessary if you want complete control over your work life. Guts, determination and putting yourself “out there” can yield fantastic results.

4- Phone a friend.

Over the years, this one seemingly simple move has provided me vison, clarity and strength. I know exactly who to call and so do you. And, when I take this important step, it helps me take charge of situations. I don’t always have the answers, sometimes I do. But it moves me forward and that is often enough to make my next move(s). Work life and personal life are our existence. How we choose to take charge is essential to our mental, emotional and physical health.

5- Write it down.

Pen to paper, fingers to keyboard, notes on your phone. Doing this allows you to flush out all the thoughts and emotions giving you room to advance and take charge of your life. Once you have this available to look at any time you want, you’ll begin to process and think about next moves. Priceless!

There is one person in charge of you even if you have to support family, spouse, significant other, partner. It’s you and only you can make final decisions that affect your professional career. Thankfully, there are many steps you can take so be brave, move forward and take charge of your career. You’ve got this!
