Quickfire Q&A with our Lead IRATA Instructor
We interview John McCarthy our resident IRATA Level 3 instructor and ask 6 quick fire questions.
Q1) When did you leave the Military? I left way back in 2002, it seems so long ago now and I still remember leaving those gates for the last time.
Q2) How long have you been working in rope access? I first started in the industry about 8 years ago, since this time I have conducted work at various sites across the UK and Europe.
Q3) How did you get into this line of work? At the time I was working for a confined space company as a joiner and we were tasked with some jobs working at height and were asked to gain the Level 1 IRATA qualification so we could expand our capability.
Q4) What has been your most unusual job? A few years ago I remember we did a job working above a number of Airbus wings, each of which was worth over £3 million. Part of the safety brief was to let management know straight away if we dropped any materials or tools. Thankfully we completed the whole job without dropping anything.
Q5) What has been your most demanding job? There have been so many but the job at Heathrow’s terminal 5 was probably the most difficult mainly due to access.
Q6) How many have you trained? I have trained many people on task but with CTS I have trained over 100 with an impressive 99% success rate so far.
