QuickCapture - How would I use this tool?
Hello Everyone,
This week marks week 1 of...
"How would I use this tool"
This will be a series of the A New Geospatial Perspective Newsletter... Each week I will be focusing on a different tool in the Esri toolbox... I will be looking at each tool as if I was still working for local government. However, this time I will be looking through the lens of if I knew then what I know now, how would I have used this tool???
First - ArcGIS QuickCapture
For those of you who know me. You know that QuickCapture is my favorite data collection application. Back when I first started at Esri I derived two different workflows using QuickCapture that directly applied to my time back working in local government. Hands-Free Voice-Activated Data Capture, and the QuickCapture to Workforce integration. If you want deeper dives into these two workflows let me know...
So... How would I use this tool?
QuickCapture has a ton of different applications in local government data collection. It is built for rapid data collection. It is the easiest application you can use when you fear training your non-tech-savvy staff on how to use it. If your staff has a smartphone with cell phone connectivity. Then creating a QuickCapture for them to snap a picture of a pothole, or snap a picture of a damaged sign, or graffiti is fairly simple.
The easiest way to think about it is... If I want people within my organization to collect a large number of things with minimal variables or at least variables I can define I should use quick capture. If the item they are collecting will have multiple variables it may be a job for Survey123 or Field Maps.
Here is a look at a few of the QC projects I have set up for example.
In this public works QC project, you can see things that would have minimal if any variables. It merely lets me mark the location of something because something needs to be done about it, and or if need to tell someone that I did something somewhere.

In this road closure QC, I am enabling the people setting roadblocks to tell other people the location and reason for the roadblock.
In this QC I am just marking where I have treated roads for broadleaf plants and if and where I have spotted Noxious Weeds so that it can be taken care of in the future.
I am not sure if this QC project could be any simpler. A single button that allows the user to collect a line to say, I... the equipment operator, graded this road, at this time. This provides a permanent record to show who graded it and when.
Keep in mind this is just the tip of the iceberg. Collect points, lines, and polygons with just the tap of a button. This data is stored as a feature layer in your ArcGIS Online or Portal to be used in a multitude of apps that we will talk about in upcoming newsletters.
Above is the original introduction video...
Below is how, and to the extent to which variables can be included in a project.
I hope this is helpful and helps spark some ideas!!
Until Next Time...
Keep up the good work...
P.S. Let me know which one you would like to cover next and if you have any questions don't hesitate to ask...
