QUICK VIEW - A Day is a Day
By the time you read this, Australia Day will have passed for another year. Yet it is a day that creates debate about several subjects.
There is the continuing debate about whether the day should be celebrated at all. Australia Day has been given alternative titles such as ‘Invasion Day’ and ‘Survival Day’. I see both sides of the debate and believe it is appropriate to acknowledge the day has both a positive and negative legacy.
We are now debating the process for awarding Australians on Australia Day. The most prominent recipient in this debate is Margaret Court. Is the award simply acknowledging her successful tennis career or does it also acknowledge her personal religious views? Are we able to separate one from the other? For some, definitely not.
Then we have a Member of Parliament posting a tweet putting denying Australia Day, petrol sniffing and school attendance in remote Australia together. Everyone is entitled to their point of view. However, is this what we expect from our representatives? We have seen what this type of rhetoric can incite elsewhere.
Whether we will ever resolve these issues remains to be seen.
We cannot undo the past. Yet it is difficult when some do not want to acknowledge it at all. Get over it. Well, you can’t get over it when the same outcomes keep being repeated only in different ways.
Acknowledging the past and learning from it helps us to take steps to create a better outcome for all.
