A quick update on the unacceptable comments by Eddie McGuire

A quick update on the unacceptable comments by Eddie McGuire

An update on last week’s post on the poisonous comments by Eddie McGuire.

I wrote how social media makes it harder, now, for people like Eddie McGuire to get away with outrageous comments, such as those about ‘drowning Caroline Wilson’.

So since then a lot of people have commented to me on the saga, as perhaps they may have with you, with views ranging from “Bah, it’s not important”, to “He doesn’t deserve to have air-time.”

From a public relations point-of-view we look at longer term implications and so as a post-script I like Simon Thomsen's story (linked below) about Steve Biddulph’s views.

And BTW, as you read it, it's worth noting that for this type of apology to have listener-cred in these cynical days, it needs to contain three components: first the apology, second an explanation of what has been learnt, and third a commitment that the error will not happen again (which then has to stand the test of time).

I wholeheartedly concur Peter, there is a big lesson to be learned...unless we continue to evolve & learn we will become dinosaurs. What was once considered normal behavior simply isn't the case today, an example is how society once viewed smoking in public places. Once we smoked or could smoke anywhere... that is NO longer the case. Where once Eddie's blokey language was accepted or tolerated, today it simply doesn't cut it.
