Quick review of the New Samsung GearVR
If you're like me you've been anxiously waiting for the Samsung GearVR consumer model to come out for the past several months. For me, having mine on pre-order with Amazon.com proved to be a huge big mistake. Amazon failed at delivering their pre-order commitments and after waiting and waiting, mine finally showed up!
Samsung has fallen short on my expectations and here are my reason why:
- It came in a flimsy & crappy box. I no longer have a durable & protective case to store my headset in (like in the innovator edition). I can understand why they skimped here; I presume that they wanted to get the price down under one hundred dollars.
- The inside where the optics are located is now white. They should have kept it black for two reasons; One, its too bright in the corners which takes me out of the vr experience. Two, since it's white I can see all the grime and dirt which isn't very inviting seeing as though I'm about to put it on my face.
- It feels very fragile.
- It's uncomfortably wide and feels more like a generic HMD.
- Typically within five or ten minutes of use my battery is completely drained, or I get a notification saying that my phone has overheated (and I don't attribute this to my pretty face!).
Here's the good news:
- It's worth the $99.00 bucks.
- It's now compatible with multiple Samsung devices (Galaxy Note5 , Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 edge, Galaxy S6 edge+).
- Great marketplace with tons of content to view and purchase.
- It feels roughly 25% lighter.
- The straps are slightly more comfortable.
- A charger slot has been added so your phone can charge while in use.
