Quick Review: iPhone 6s
This time, I went away from the white bezel of the past 2 generations and went back to where I started with the black bezel of the "Space Gray". The black bezel is more down-to-business and sleeker. My iPads have always been with black bezels as the eye relief and overall presentation is better when you have dark surrounds on something that you're watching, especially movies or videos.
I went with the 128GB this time and that coupled with the fact that iOS 9 is actually smaller in size than the previous version, there is lots of room to hold my apps and especially my lossless music files.
Ok, what's the verdict? Here's the speed round version:
- This is a "-s" model year and you get mainly enhancements and not a huge change, which is true this time again
- I was after improvements in speed with the faster A9 chip and I'm actually pleasantly surprised at how much snappier the performance of this phone is now. I don't like waiting for technology to do its thing when I give a command and the device works exceptionally well now -- big plus
- Next was the increase in speed of Touch ID, which is positively dramatic. It works so fast that there is no perception at all of something special happening. Actually, given the overall performance of the phone now, it almost feels like it's unlocking and getting presented to you too fast -- big plus.
- The cameras are significantly improved on-paper with their specs and I can confirm, from just a handful of shots, that they perform significantly better. Both from the overall quality due to the bump up in megapixels, but also even the low-light shots are improved. As well, the dreaded selfie shot is also better as the front-facing camera also got significantly improved -- plus
- The 3D Touch feature has a ton of promise. You can look at it, cynically, as just a right-click. Even so, coupled with creativity of how to use apps with this right-click, I've already seen a lot of value in productivity in getting things done faster. And, the tactile feedback of the mechanism makes it even better than just a dead-feeling right-click on a traditional touch-screen -- plus
Wrapping up --- for me this was an unexpectedly good upgrade. Going in, I wanted faster speed and a faster Touch ID. Because, both will make my experience significantly better in terms of my needs & usage. That alone would've been worthwhile of the upgrade. But, they delivered even better performance than my expectations and a few other things that I'm finding quite useful. So, I'm pretty happy with the experience even after just a couple of days of ownership.
Oh, and iOS 9 is a welcome update and I've had no issues with it yet.
Lastly, everything is not peaches here. Both the depth and weight of the device increased, but the difference looked quite small on paper. However, I have found that both are surprisingly noticeable. I wouldn't call it "heavy" now nor "fat", but surprised how the seemingly small bumps in both areas are easily felt.
