Quick read: German overshoot day is May 4th
Overshoot day means: if humanity were to live like the Germans do, the demand for ecological resources today would now exceed the resources that the Earth can regenerate in one year.
In general, country overshoot days are published on January 1st?of each year. To meet this deadline, the 2023 country overshoot days were calculated in December 2022 using the 2022 edition of the National Footprint and Biocapacity Accounts.
Biocapacity might not be a KPI which is generally known: therefore, we provide a short definition: “The capacity of ecosystems to regenerate what people demand from ecological surfaces”. Biocapacity as an important part of the equation is usually expressed in global hectares (gha). (1)
To explain the calculation of the German Overshoot Day, let`s have a look at the latest data. Germany’s 2023 overshoot day is based on the results?from the 2022 edition of the National Footprint and Biocapacity Accounts:
Therefore, it would take?(4.01/ 1.61) = 2.49?Earths to support humanity if everyone on the planet lived like we do in Germany.
What is REMONDIS' part in the equation?
By recovering raw materials and producing recyclates, the circular economy in general, and REMONDIS in particular,?help to save scarce resources and reduce carbon emissions.?Our recycled raw materials protect the environment by substituting virgin materials hence natural resources.
They curb climate change as recycling processes are less energy-intensive, reduce dependency on imports, and safeguard industrial locations in Europe
