As a Registered Dietitian, I receive many questions about the latest nutrition claims in the media. In the following few issues, I will debunk the most persistent myths and mistruths to empower you with knowledge.
Myth 1:
Fresh produce is healthier than frozen.
FALSE! Food companies pick and freeze produce at the peak of ripeness, and studies show that frozen foods have as many vitamins and antioxidants as fresh ones, and in some cases, even more. Research shows that the longer you store fresh produce, the more nutritional value it loses. If you buy fresh produce with the full intention of preparing it, but it turns into a science project in your refrigerator after a few days, you know exactly what I mean!
So, buy frozen fruits and vegetables if it makes more sense for your schedule and your wallet. And let’s put this myth to bed once and for all.
