Quick Pedestrian or Product, Do You See What is Not in Your Review Mirror?
Mirrors on forklifts play a vital role in ensuring safety by providing operators with better visibility and helping them identify potential hazards. They also contribute to increased efficiency and productivity by enabling operators to maneuver the forklift more effectively, navigate tight spaces, and avoid obstacles. However, it is important to note that mirrors alone are not enough to ensure safety. It is crucial for operators to receive proper training, follow guidelines, and use other safety features along with mirrors.
OSHA speaks directly to the direction of travel in two regulations seen just below. In 1910.178 Regulations for powered industrial trucks, there is no mention of mirrors. Their use isn’t restricted or promoted.
1910.178(n)(4) The driver shall be required to slow down and sound the horn at cross aisles and other locations where vision is obstructed. If the load being carried obstructs forward view, the driver shall be required to travel with the load trailing.
1910.178(n)(6) The driver shall be required to look in the direction of and keep a clear view of the path of travel.
By combining mirrors with additional safety measures, we can further enhance forklift safety and reduce the occurrence of accidents. Restricting the use of mirrors on lift trucks may lead to increased ergonomic challenges and compromise operator safety. The use of mirrors significantly improves visibility, giving operators a clearer view of their surroundings and reducing the risk of accidents and collisions if they are not going to comply with OSHA standards. If a forklift versus pedestrian accident occurs, OSHA will focus on the operator’s reliance upon them.
Let’s review the pros and cons, then we’ll wrap this up.
Pros
- Improved visibility: Mirrors on forklift trucks provide operators with better visibility, allowing them to see obstacles and pedestrians more easily.
- Enhanced safety: With mirrors, forklift operators can have a clearer view of their surroundings, reducing the risk of accidents and collisions.
- Increased efficiency: Mirrors enable operators to maneuver the forklift more efficiently by providing a wider field of view, helping them navigate tight spaces and improve productivity.
- Cost-effective solution: Installing mirrors on forklift trucks is a relatively inexpensive safety measure compared to other advanced technologies or modifications.
Cons
- Limited perspective: Mirrors may have blind spots and limitations, preventing operators from seeing certain angles or areas, which could pose a safety risk.
- Vulnerable to damage: Mirrors on forklift trucks are exposed to potential damage from collisions, impacts, or environmental factors, requiring regular maintenance or replacement.
- Distorted reflection: Depending on the mirror's quality, it may provide distorted or unclear reflections, hindering the operator's ability to accurately assess their surroundings.
- Potential distraction: Constantly checking mirrors can divert the operator's attention from other critical tasks, potentially affecting their overall concentration and performance.
- Inadequate in certain conditions: Mirrors may be ineffective in low-light environments or when visibility is impaired by factors such as rain, fog, or dust, limiting their usefulness.

Mirrors on forklift trucks provide better visibility, safety, efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and regulatory compliance. They have limitations such as limited perspective, vulnerability to damage, distorted reflection, potential distraction, and inadequacy in certain conditions.
In conclusion, using mirrors as part of lift truck safety measures has merit. They improve visibility, enhance ergonomics, and reduce workplace injuries. However, it's important to remember that mirrors alone are not sufficient for ensuring safety. Operators should receive proper training, follow guidelines, and use other safety features in addition to mirrors for maximum safety and fewer accidents.
