A Quick News Flash of the World Today

Hello!! Welcome to " A Quick News Flash of the World Today!!" I hope everyone has learned something new since last month and\or have tried something new!! To keep up that learning spirit, because I know I like seeing what's happening in the world and learning something new, especially if it is a funny or cute thing!! I will start with enertaing cute stories, then go to more serious "think about" topics, and end with something funny or cute to go back out into the world refreshed!! [ the links to learn more about the topics are at the bottom!!]

I will start with a entertaining and cute story, of a rescue!! About how animals struggle on ice, especially Baby Deer, because of the hooves and learning how to walk!! So when a Baby Deer on Utah’s Panguitch Lake got stuck it was lucky enough to have some fishermen on the same day doing some winter fishing!! They saw this little Deer and they decided to go over and help, when they got there Jackson one of the fishermen told 2KUTV, “I picked it up and it was super calm, super docile, like it kind of understood, OK these guys are going to try and help me.” Then the deer walked off happily when they got to land!!

Another rescue of a baby happened on the side of a highway, but this time it was a human baby!! Joe Hylton is a Big Rig driver and because crashes and things happens on highways and Joe spends a lot of time on the Highway, he sometimes sees these accidents and helps. One of these times he was cruising down the Highway he saw a pretty bad car accident where both cars where really banged up. A man from one of the cars was running down the highway saying " I can't find my Daughter" and "Where is my Daughter," Joe saw that there was a car seat in one of the cars. Joe went into dad mode as he has three children of his own, he got out and started to help looking in the marshy area beside the road!! After a while he found a gray bundle in the grass, and was worried and scared at what injuries this two year old might have. But to his astonishment and relief the little girl reached up to him without a single scratch. The thankful and tearful dad thanked Joe, who got back in his truck and went on his way. Happily the New Jersey Fire Department Battalion Chief, who happened to arrive on the scene, was able to track down Joe to recognize him for his heroism. Which is awesome because the two year old might have been hurt and finding her was a relief for her and her father, it is good he was recognized for it!!

On a completely different topic in Kyoto, Japan they are making a satellite from organic material, and will be sending it out in 2023. Its for a study to see how organic material holds up in space!! It is a harmless alternative to metal and it will cut down on space junk which is starting to be a problem. Researchers and space experts from Kyoto University; a former Japanese astronaut; and the Sumitomo Group which is a nearly 400-year old company, are working to develop a special kind of wood that can survive in the harsh environment of space. As it is freezing up there!! "When the wooden satellites enter the atmosphere after the operation [ being used and serving its purpose ] will be completely burned out. This will lead to the development of cleaner and environmentally friendly artificial satellites that do not generate minute substances (alumina particles) that can be a source of air pollution during combustion.” This is better because right now when metal satellites burn in the atmosphere they "Create tiny alumina particles which will float in the upper atmosphere for many years" Takao Doi told BBC. So this prevents air pollution which is really good!!

For the last cute and entertaining story we are going across the sea from my home of Edmonton, all the way to Saudi Arabia!! Saudi Arabia is delivering to the world a worthwhile example of future living: as it announced plans to build a revolutionary zero-carbon, zero-traffic city for over a million people, spanning 105 miles and featuring futuristic technology. Construction is set to start in the first quarter of 2021, the hope is the 105-mile network of AI-operated automated transport will be along and around the coast of the Red Sea through four distinct districts (coastal, coastal desert, mountains, and upper valley.) In this city there will be no cars, no streets, and no pollution, and sun and wind will generate almost all of the electricity, a cost that's between $100 billion and $200 billion. Much of which will come from domestic funds, and the rest from foreign investment, both from businesses wanting a stake in the city of the future and companies looking to showcase technological innovation.

$1.5 billion of that money is supposed to come from cloud information technology!! Something funny is when I read cloud information technology I wanted to figure out why would someone research clouds and have technology for it. Then realized they were talking about technology and not real clouds!! So this is an exciting city and I am curious how this will be moving forward, especially with COVID 19!!

Now we're done fun, exciting, and cute stories and are going to move to stories which aren't bad but a little less exciting, serious, and "think about!!"

I will start with a happy serious topic, which is Joe Biden becoming president!!Its always exciting when there's a new president and from what I heard it was really good. Sadly I couldn't watch it as I was in school, but I could watched a few clips afterwards and hear about it!! The event started with Lady gaga singing the USA National Anthem and because I am from Canada when she started singing I was confused, but then my brain caught up to what was happening!! Andrea M Hall recited and signs the pledge of allegiance, then Kamala Harris was sworn in by Justice Sonia Sotomayor, the first Latina Supreme Court Justice. After, an all-in-white Jennifer Lopez did a mashup of "This Land Is Your Land" and "America the Beautiful!!!" Joe Biden took his oath of office with his left hand placed atop the same 5-inch thick, 127-year-old Biden family bible he's used every time he's been sworn into office since becoming senator in 1973. That book is HUGE by the way, when I saw it I was wondered for a second what it was!! Biden also did a speech about unity and listening to each other! Then 22-year-old Amanda Gorman delivered her original composition "The hills we climb" and OMG it was amazing, and I learned that Biden and her both struggle with speaking, Biden with stuttering and Gorman with saying R's!! So she recited " Aron Burr Sir" from Hamilton which has a bunch of R's in it, when learning to say the letter R properly!! So that was really exciting and I was sad I wasn't able to watch the inauguration, but I can watch clips of it!!

Something that came from Biden becoming president is him cancelling the XL oil pipeline. Know me being in Alberta on the new I have been hearing about Jason Kenny our premier who isn't pleased because oil is a pretty essential part of our economy! He describes this as a "punch in the gut." Kenney has called on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to sit down with the new administration, suggesting that the federal government impose trade and economic sanctions should those efforts be refused. The 1,897-kilometre pipeline, first announced in 2005, would have carried 830,000 barrels of crude a day from the oil sands in Alberta to Nebraska. It would then have connected with the original Keystone pipeline that runs to U.S. Gulf Coast refineries. The Canadian leg of the project has been under construction for several months with about 1,000 workers in southeast Alberta working on it. What the pipeline would do to help Canada is add $2.4 billion to Canada’s GDP and will generate more than $7 million in property taxes in the first year in service. It’s estimated the project will generate $30 billion in tax and royalty revenues for current and future generations of Albertans. So what I have gotten from why I think Jason Kenney doesn't want this pipeline to stop is because it makes jobs, and the project would generate $30 billion in tax and royalty revenues for current and future generations of Albertans. Which is beneficial for our economy!

Now I am at the last serious " Think about" Story, which is about the storming of the Capital. I wanted to learn more about what happened and what I learned I wanted to share, and without my opinion only facts!! On Jan 6th Donald Trump gave a speech saying he was going over to the capital to speak with them and encouraged the audience to go too. He said "We're going to walk down Pennsylvania Avenue and we're going to the Capitol and we're going to try and give our Republicans, the weak ones the kind of pride and boldness that they need to take back our country." So the audience walked down Pennsylvania avenue to the Capitol. Chanting crowds start to gather on both sides of the building at around 13:10, grappling with police at the metal barricades. Tear gas and pepper spray are used to try to keep the know protesters at bay. The protestors broke police lines and climbed up the stairs and they were outside the capitol. On the east side, the crowd forced their way through barricades on the Capitol Plaza and move on the main entrance, quickly gaining access to the Great Rotunda. [ picture of capitol and floor map ]

Once inside they head for the House and Senate chambers. Senators are forced to abandon the process of confirming the then President-elect Biden's victory and the building goes into lockdown. The doors of the House chamber are locked and a makeshift barricade is made in front of the doors. Security officials guard the entrance with guns drawn. Within an hour, protesters have also broken police lines on the west side of the Capitol, scaling walls to reach the building itself before smashing windows and forcing doors open. The protestors are chanting "USA" and "Stop the Steal" and wandering around. Shortly before 15:00, gunshots are reportedly heard inside the building. Photos and video footage later show a female protester being shot as she tried to break through the barricaded doors of the Speakers' Lobby. Despite trying to save her she died on scene.

On the other side of the building, protesters break into the Senate chamber. Photographs of one taking seat in the Speaker's chair, and another sitting in Speaker Nancy Pelosi's office, with his foot on the table. President Trump eventually calls for calm, telling the protesters to leave peacefully: "Go home. We love you, you're very special" he said. By 17:40, the building is cleared and made secure ahead of the 18:00 curfew ordered by DC Mayor Muriel Bowser. Several thousand National Guard troops, FBI agents and US Secret Service are deployed to help. That was the storming of the capitol on January 6th 2021, and I hope I didn't seem to have a certain opinion and you know the facts. Thank you BBC for having all the facts on the entire thing!!!

Now to end on a happy note to go back into the world refreshed, lets talk about a lizard!! In Redmond, Washington state, Lenny a one-year-old central bearded dragon can be seen with tiny pots of soup, miniature biscuits, and dinky cheeses in his debut book ‘Chef Lenny: Cooking for Humans. The cookbook was the brainchild of Lenny’s owner Valerie Musser, a chef and lizard lover, who had a small catering business before the pandemic hit!! “I’d been writing a cookbook for about 10 years but never really had the time to sit down and sort through it.” But because of quarantine Valerie had the time too!! Before long, she’d bought Lenny the lizard a little chef’s hat, from Etsy. “He actually loves wearing hats and posing for photos,” she said, “so I started making miniature food for him to show off with.” All the miniature food in the book is real and the dishes are Valerie’s favorite comfort foods that she serves to her family. With chicken pot pie, blueberry muffins, and home-cooked tacos all featured in the the 134-page cookbook, is available on Etsy and Amazon. I think it is awesome that you can buy it, because I like miniature things and it seems fun!! Definitely asking for it on my birthday, and who says you cant double the ingredients to make it bigger!! Even if it fails experimenting is fun!!

Love the format, Sophia - Great stories, the deer and baby are wonderful ways to highlight humans living their humanity by helping. Oh that lizard, what a clever idea! I am glad you are reaching out to pay attention to world events, we need as many people under 30 as possible to understand the facts about events around them as they grow and learn to become informed decision-makers our world needs. Thanks for your take and observations!
