A Quick Idea About Falling and What You’re Looking For

“You ate sh*t because you were looking for a spot to fall…”
After paddling back through the waves our surf instructor, a local Hawaiian, a former pro and big wave surfer, shared some surf wisdom that applies to life.
“Always look forward.
Don't find a spot to fall, look forward for a place to keep going.
Once you decide where you want to go your body will figure out what to do to get you there.
Actions follow thoughts.”
My wife and I later laughed about how much “surf wisdom” applies to life in general.
See, the ocean doesn’t care. It doesn’t care about you, your feelings or how you would like things to be… and that’s beautiful because that reality forces truth.
Entrepreneurship is often called “The ultimate vehicle for self-improvement” for similar reasons.
One of the biggest success killers I see with entrepreneurs is that during challenging times… perhaps late at night when they’re tired… They start to look “for a place to fall” instead of looking forward and up.
And their actions end up following those thoughts.
When has this happened to you?
That after an unexpected issue came up or something threw off your confidence you started thinking about how things could fail and then you started rapidly losing momentum?
It’s a powerful reality that actions follow thoughts.
So why do we look for spots to fall? Well, that can wait for a different day.
In the meantime, I want to offer you a more practical question to think about:
“Where in your life or business are you finding yourself looking for a spot to fall instead of looking forward and up?
Where are you perhaps letting some turbulence, challenges or fears dictate your thoughts and therefore your actions?”
The reason this is so important, beyond the tangible business results from not “looking for a place to fall”, is how you’ll feel.
Over the past month, I’ve had a bunch of wipeouts. It’s a part of the natural learning process and regardless of a couple of bumps, bruises, and chafes I never left the water frustrated after the tumbles.
But you know what would eat me up inside?
When I either didn’t fully go for a wave or started looking down when things got choppy or someone got in the way.

When I got a bit overwhelmed and looked for a place to fall and “ate sh*t” (for no valid reason).
And from what I’ve experienced in myself and from coaching over 100 7-9 figure entrepreneurs that’s usually how it is.
When we look forward and up and go for something regardless of the fear or overwhelm we feel better about ourselves.
We feel proud, sleep better at night, and 90% of the time our businesses grow.
But what eats us up inside is when we know we’re not going for it… That we’re playing small and looking for a safe spot to fall.
It creates internal frustration and poor results.
Sometimes, like I did in the surf, we need a coach to remind us to disregard the fear or overwhelm and simply look forward.
Remember, your thoughts will dictate your actions. Disregard the fear, look forward and you’ll figure it out from there.
Worst case scenario you’ll tumble a bit, but feel good about yourself for going for it.
