A Quick Guide to DisContent Creation

A Quick Guide to DisContent Creation

If LinkedIn posts from the recent past were to be made into shorts novels, here's what they would probably be called:

  • Malcolm Gladwell, How Could You: A Re-re-retake on Remote Working
  • The Crying CEO Has Two Faces
  • Commenting for Better Reach: The Subtle Art of Reciprocal Engagement

There's a lot of discontent on LinkedIn and we, at Cafe Nervosa, want to (rather opportunistically) add our voice to it. In fact, we have coined a new term for the influx of posts on LinkedIn. Content creation is a thing of the past. Welcome to the age of Discontent Creation.

Here are three pieces of advice for aspiring discontent creators:

1. Discontent is King: Snapping up the latest event and expressing fervent discontent over it is a highly effective strategy to generate more traction for your posts. Here's the winning formula: <Insert latest happening> is so shocking / amazing / humbling. It reminds / teaches us to <insert life lesson>

2. Optimizing for Discontent: Begin with the assumption that you will need to invade the flickering attention spans of potential readers with snazzy headlines, and other tricks (hashtags, pictures, spacing, emojis). The headlines are what matter - your one-line view on it is incidental; because, let's face it: your readers' feeds are going to be infiltrated with several other, similar-sounding one-line views.

3. Opinion-as-a-Service: Remember, you are not here just to express yourself. You are also performing the noble service of coaching and mentoring others through the rigorous production of optimized opinions.

I recently read the book titled “Stolen Focus” - a really good one on why our ability to focus is decreasing over the years. In one of the sections where the author was elaborating on the effects of social media, he quoted research on how rage, anger, and discontent posts get a lot more traction.
