Changing the future of the financial services workplace?

-- Leading Canadian online brokerage delivers on mission of care?with new flexible work opportunities --

Questrade Financial Group (QFG) -- Canada’s #1 rated* online brokerage -- is aiming to change the future of work. While many employers are announcing return-to-office plans, the company is letting employees choose to work from the comfort of their home, a redesigned office in Toronto, or a combination of both -- meaning employees can customize their lifestyle and schedules and are no longer required to work from a traditional office workplace.

"The pandemic has taught us many things, including that our people increasingly want their flexibility, independence, and an increased focus on their families,” said Emma Horgan, Chief People Officer, Questrade. “Feedback indicated that priorities have shifted. We listened and have adapted to implement an exciting new way to work that demonstrates our commitment to, and trust in, our team."

"At Questrade, our promise is to do what is best for our employees’ wellness and productivity.” Emma Horgan, Chief People Officer.

The office is equipped with various meeting rooms, fully tech integrated to accommodate the hybrid work environment.

The workplace culture club

As if foreseeing the new way to work, the company embarked on major, multi-year, multiple building office renovations before the pandemic. The complete overhaul has enabled the transition from dedicated workstations across multiple floors to agile, non-assigned seating in a modern new setting, with large open spaces to work, eat, collaborate, and relax. There are increased leisure and game areas, ergonomic standing desks, and multiple configurable meeting spaces, all of which may be booked in advance through an app by employees who want or need to visit the office.

While a small percentage of team members attend in person based on specific requirements of their roles, many elect to attend simply to use the space to work, discuss strategic priorities, celebrate achievements, for team building, and as a venue for social post-work activities and themed evening events.?

Some Questrade employees enjoy one of the many collaborative working spaces.

“Our offices are a space to collaborate, socialize, and foster personal health and well-being,” continued Ms. Horgan. “On a typical Friday night, you’ll find people in the office staying late and having fun simply to socialize together, which speaks to our culture of providing an enthusiastic sense of teamwork, collaboration, and belonging.”

A passport to freedom

The new flexible work option allows staff to work abroad for up to 90 days a year, giving true meaning to “working from anywhere.” Despite being hybrid, Questrade has maintained its culture of collaboration and provides an inclusive experience for all distributed and in-office employees. Measures to achieve this include:

  • Online collaboration tools to blend both remote and hybrid work?
  • The latest technology in all collaborative spaces/meeting rooms, enabling hybrid teams to hold effective meetings where everyone feels included and heard
  • Ensuring everyone is set up with equipment and licensing to work from home, including extra monitors, keyboards, and headsets to improve their work from a home set-up
  • Introducing a hoteling app to let people book work and collaboration spaces
  • All in-person programs are available online, including initiatives such as town halls, celebrations, social events, training, and development programs
  • All health and wellness programs like weekly yoga, meditation, and wellbeing workshops are virtual
  • The entire Questrade onboarding process is virtual
