Questions you should be asking as a candidate

We always tell candidates it's important to ask questions at the end of the interview. Why? Because asking insightful and relevant questions can demonstrate your interest in the position and the company, as well as provide you with valuable information to help you make an informed decision about whether the role is a good fit for you.

So, what are some great questions to ask in a first interview?

Can you tell me more about the day-to-day responsibilities of this role?

What qualities do successful employees in this company possess?

Can you describe the company culture and how it impacts day-to-day work?

What do you like most about working for this company?

Can you describe the next steps in the hiring process and when I can expect to hear back from you?

Remember, the questions you ask should demonstrate your interest in the company and the position, as well as provide you with valuable information to help you make an informed decision about the position. Avoid asking questions that can be easily answered by researching the company online, and be sure to tailor your questions to the specific role and industry.

You survived the first interview and now they want to meet you again!

You like them and want to get to know more about the team, the goals, the project and the company.

So, some great questions to ask are:

Tell me about the team. What do they value in a team member? What makes a good team member?

What are the biggest challenges facing this team or department right now? Is there a plan in place and where does this role fit in?

How does the company support employee growth and development?

Can you tell me about any upcoming projects or initiatives that the company is working on?

How is performance measured?

Does the company promote from within?

How does the company foster diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace?

These answers will help you determine if the culture, values, and the job are a match to what you are looking for and will show your interest in the opportunity. Win-win!

I was surprised when candidates didn't have any questions - why not! It's an important decision and most of us spend a lot of time at work. Thanks for the reminder.
