What is the work You can’t not do?
This is a useful question to ask yourself if you are wondering what you should be doing with your life or if you’re doing the right thing, and are hoping that you will find this answer in some form that is better than what you have now.
But strangely enough, the best guides; the truest Truths — are often the simplest, most obvious ones. The ones we’re so used to seeing, that we don’t even really notice them anymore. And so we go looking for grander sounding, prettier looking truths. While the answer was right in front of us all along. Occam’s Razor, applied to life.
So if you are wondering what you should be doing, ask yourself what you can’t not-do. Ask yourself, what it is that you can’t help doing.
Needless to say there may be layers of reasons why you can’t help yourself doing this. Perhaps you were conditioned into it, and you‘re doing it unknowingly. But that also means you’ve done it for so long, you’re a natural at it. You do it so well, that nobody can beat you at it.
Akin to a client who remarked “I can’t help myself when it comes to helping people” Needless to say, in the world we live in, that is a quality that is easily misused by others. (High ‘Agreeableness’ in the Big 5 Test) But allowing her to come to terms with that, becoming aware of and recognising her capacity to help others, allowed her to do what she wants to do, what she’s good at, without being taken for a ride.
Like her, you too can become aware of your inherent capacity. And do it when you want, on command. Thereby putting you in charge of your own capacity, as opposed to, at the mercy of it.
So ask yourself, and when you find it, do it. And if you see that you can’t do it without force, well you haven’t found it. Ask yourself once again. And so on. Until you can do it over and over again.
