Questions people ask about the first Secretary-General’s UN Special Envoy on Water

Water is flowing uphill to the top of the international agenda.

The UN Secretary-General has just announced the appointment of his first-ever UN Special Envoy on Water.

This new role is the first of its kind – making water a central priority for the UN as it tackles major global challenges, from climate change to food security.

As we approach the UN’s landmark Summit of the Future, where global leaders and civil society will gather to discuss reforms to the UN, these are some of the questions people are asking us about the new Special Envoy on Water.

Who is the UN Special Envoy on Water?

Retno L.P. Marsudi of the Republic of Indonesia is the UN Secretary-General’s first UN Special Envoy on Water.

Her Excellency Mrs. Marsudi is the current Foreign Minister of Indonesia and will take up the role of Special Envoy on Water on 1 November 2024, after distinguished government service of more than 40 years.

??

What is the role of the Special Envoy?

The Special Envoy will be a champion and high-level advocate for water-related issues, inside and outside the UN, bringing stakeholders together and mobilizing action and financial resources to address the global water crisis.

?

What is the UN Summit of the Future?

The UN Summit of the Future, on 22-23 September 2024 at UN Headquarters, will gather world leaders and civil society to discuss how to make the UN and international cooperation more effective.

Delegates will focus on sustainable development and financing; peace and security; digital technology; youth and future generations; and global governance.

?

Will water be a focus in the Summit of the Future?

The?Pact for the Future will be the main outcome of the Summit. The Pact currently exists in draft form and will continue to be shaped by all the Summit’s stakeholders, with Member States adopting the final version of the Pact at the end of the Summit.

Water and sanitation are embedded in several of the draft ‘actions’, including on water quality, food security, poverty, climate change adaptation and mitigation, technology, and peace-building.

This reflects the international recognition that faster and greater progress on water and sanitation will drive gains across all dimensions of sustainable development, particularly in tackling climate change, disease, poverty, biodiversity loss and food insecurity.

??

What will the Special Envoy on Water do first?

When Mrs. Marsudi takes office on 1 November 2024, her workload will include helping the UN implement the water-related recommendations and pledges contained within the Pact for the Future.

One of her main roles will be to support the implementation of the new UN System-wide Strategy for Water and Sanitation, which aims to accelerate global progress towards all water-related goals and targets, such as Sustainable Development Goal 6: safe water and sanitation for all by 2030.

The Special Envoy will also take a global lead on water in the run up to various global water processes, particularly the 2026 UN Water Conference. ?

Going forward, the first-ever UN Special Envoy on Water will help to further strengthen the unprecedented political consensus around water as a critical tool in helping solve the world’s most serious challenges.

We commit to collaborate on the new Water Envoy's work, specially advocating for a global #WaterPositive commitment which can help address the water resources crisis that we're facing globally due to the climate crisis and increasing water demand. Let's go positive! ??
