ON THIS EDITION of leadership breeze, I want to get you laughing, Lol...Laugh and learn. I want to get you thinking about questions.
A brilliant person is not someone who gives answers to questions based on what he or she has read in books or articles or from what is displayed on the teleprompter – a brilliant person is a walking body of answers – leaders are brilliant people - leadership is about answering questions, asking the right questions and providing solutions to problems.
One important thing about audacity in leadership, is the ability to ask the right questions. It reminds me of a story I heard as a little boy. There were four brothers whose names were: WHAT IS YOUR NAME? STUPID; MANNERS & TROUBLE – the little boy was missing and the first three sprinted to the police station to get help.
When they arrived, the Police Chief was alone in the station but because the first boy had been running, he was still catching his breath and couldn’t speak immediately. “What is your name?” the Chief queried. “Wow! Sir, how did you know that WHAT IS YOUR NAME is my name?” Upset, the Chief asked; “Are you stupid?” No Sir, I am not STUPID, he is outside, STUPID, come in, the officer is asking for you. As they both stood before him still panting; the Chief Thundered: “Don’t you have manners? Yes, we have MANNERS, he is our brother and is outside; MANNERS come in the officer calls for you” they chorused. Now frightened being in the station alone and surrounded by three tall and bulky teenagers of 18, 17 & 16; the Chief screamed: “Are you looking for trouble?” and their answer was, “Yes, we are looking for TROUBLE but officer how did you know? The chief got up and ran out the door shouting into his radio; “Back up needed; station being invaded, Officer down”. Then he collapsed.?

It’s very hilarious, right? What if the Chief had just followed up his first question with: “Really, what is your name is your name? Interesting, anyway, what can we do for you?” It would have been so simple. My counsel to you is to learn to ask the right question and if the first answer disappoints you, don’t lose your cool, ask a follow up question and fix the problem.
Knowing which question to ask, which to repeat and which question may require a follow up, sets one set of leaders apart from the others.
