Questions every WOC should ask during interviews

Questions every WOC should ask during interviews

Early on in my career I didn’t know to ask these questions ??

And that lack of knowledge hurt me for sure.

I’ve worked for organizations that didn’t value diversity and inclusion. Because of it they simply didn’t value me.

This lack of support meant I had to navigate the work world alone, leading to me being passed over for well-deserved pay raises and promotions, and feeling as though I’d never make it to the level of success I sought in my career.

All things job-related can be tricky to navigate, especially the interview process. But it is particularly tricky for women of color. On the one hand, it can be tough us just to get in the door -- one study from Harvard Business Review found that if there’s only one person of color in the candidate pool, there’s statistically no chance she will be hired.

Even if we do get the interview and land the job, the challenges don’t end there. They extend into us dealing with stereotypes, microaggression, tokenism, racism, sexism, unfair burden of work. The list goes on and on.

And my?#1?rule for my clients is to use the interview to not only show your talent, but to learn if this is really an organization that will support your success.

Through much trial and error I learned the questions we as women of color simply must ask organizations during an interview. Because it all starts at that pivotal moment when you have the chance to ask, take in the information, and make your own informed decision about working in that space.

So make sure you ask these questions during your next job interview to ensure any company is a place where you can truly thrive!

Feel like you're asking FAKE AF questions during interviews? You know the ones that don't get to the root of what you really need to know as a woman of color.

Well in The Professional Quitters, my group coaching program for women of color job seekers, you learn how to ask the right questions that help you understand:

  • What the company is doing to increase diversity in their leadership team.
  • How they focus on the growth and development of women and people of color specifically.
  • What they do to retain staff of color.
  • How they handle complaints from staff of color and what they do to ensure there is an environment of inclusion.
  • How they are handling the pay gap for women of color and what is their take on pay transparency.
  • How often they do pay reviews and adjust for pay discrepancies.
  • How they will specifically grow and develop you and what they expect your career trajectory and path will be in the company. And even deeper, how they will help you get there.

Asking these questions is how you ensure you don’t just start a new job. Instead, you start your new career. At the company that is right for you. Allows you to be you. And focuses on what you need to thrive as a woman of color in the workplace.

Loved this so much. A company that cares to train and develop its workers' skills, it's a company worth working for. <3 Best of luck to all WOC sisters. Say NO to mediocrity.
