Questions to Clarify Your Writing Project

Questions to Clarify Your Writing Project

Asking the right questions is one way to improve your output as a writer and to spare yourself heartache in the process. The right questions help you gain clarity on your project, audience, purpose, and structure.

Thinking about a writing project can seem overwhelming. So, I put together three question sets to help you start gaining clarity on your concept.

[The following question set helps you find juicy, undiscovered angles.]

  • What are others not saying about your topic? What have people left out of the conversation in the content you've seen? Would you want to incorporate any of those topics into your work? If so, jot them down.

[This question set helps you guide your reader to a transformation, which will create an illuminating and memorable experience for them.]

  • Imagine your reader "enters" your work one way and "exits" your work with new knowledge or insights. How do they transform from A to B? What's their experience like?

[This set helps you empathize and connect with your readers, so you can write an anti-boring book.]

  • What do your future readers already hear or think about your topic? Whether they think the topic is "too hard to learn" or that they need to learn it "asap to keep their job" will inform their urgency and the way you craft your writing.

A business bestie told me that the questions I posed during our book clarity sessions helped him clarify his book concept. I hope you find these questions helpful on your project, too.

I believe in you.

Cheers

Really resonate with the question on - "what do future readers already hear or think about the topic" Deborah. Thanks for these valuable tips.

I love the question on "how does your reader transform from A to B" - a very powerful consideration and something important to keep in mind. So simple yet so easy to forget. I appreciate the reminder, Deborah Ager.
