Question Your "Professionalism"

Question Your "Professionalism"

Self-care content is everywhere—on social media, in articles, in everyday conversations. But what’s often overlooked is that the opposite of self-care isn’t just a lack of pampering; it’s self-neglect. Knowing that makes it easier to see where your self-care efforts should go.

One of the biggest hidden causes of self-neglect? Professionalism—or at least, what we’ve been conditioned to believe it means. I challenge you to rethink your definition of professionalism in the context of self-neglect.

Too often, being "professional" translates into working endless hours, sacrificing time with friends or family, side-lining hobbies, skipping the things fulfil your needs—whether that’s going to the gym, leaving the office on time, or simply taking a break.

So when you think about self-care, don’t just picture a bubble bath or a little treat. Instead, think about breaking the habit of self-neglect. Change starts with a decision. You have to notice when self-neglect is happening in the moment, and if it helps, say the word "change" out loud to yourself.

The biggest reason people stay stuck in self-neglect? Fear. Fear of being judged as unprofessional, of not working hard enough, of being overlooked for promotions or pay raises. But don’t let those fears hold you back. If they do turn out to be true, that’s valuable information—it means you’re in the wrong place. More likely, though, you’ll find those fears were unfounded, and you’ll feel incredible for challenging the behavior.

If you’re stuck in a pattern of self-neglect in the name of professionalism, I have one client space opening in March. Let’s talk about how coaching can help you shift your habits—so you can become a happier, less anxious, more rested, more motivated, and more engaged version of yourself. Because that is true professionalism.
