We Discuss...

• Dropped out of University to have a three year gap year, and doing underwater photography, working on a boat in Cairns, before managing bands and running a theatre show
• Being a mature aged student, having more worldly knowledge, getting distinctions in all of his courses
• Entering the recruitment world in 1999 by answering recruitment jobs for sales opportunities

• Loved recruitment, but struggled after being a free agent for a long period of time, and having to work in a full time office job
• “Selling photocopiers is easier, as the photocopies don’t talk back” and the challenge of the two sided sales in recruitment
• A list of 46 things he made that he would do differently compared to his early recruitment businesses, including better structure and planning in advance
• Seeing an influx of Sydney or Melbourne candidates in Newcastle
• Being unbelievably busy in the current market, doing 80% retained work, whereas it used to be 80% contingency work
• Starting a non-alcoholic beer business brand, after deciding to go sober himself, and talking about getting distribution in ALDI
• Taking 20+ years of struggling with alcohol, and breaking the cycle with 440 days without drinking alcohol, taking 6 months off to go to Brisbane and study beer making at TAFE
• The biggest challenge in Australia is the small size of our consumer market
• “If at a young age you can find what you enjoy doing, then you’re laughing” and why David didn’t really find what he was passionate about until he was 51
