Question 7. Are you dealing with an account rep or the design principal?

In my previous article, I asked if the designer had packaging design experience.

The role of the account rep is to look after you and your project. And that’s a good thing. However, the account rep not only communicates directly with you, they also get that information from their management and design team. The account rep not only is the main receiver of information; they are also the main transmitter of information. Depending on the number of levels and number of people involved in your project, sometimes key information can get lost in the transmission of information.

When working with the packaging design principal, you typically are talking with the person who will be leading and designing your package design project. They will be very hands-on and know every detail of your package and where it’s at in the design process.

Make sure summary emails of conversations and meetings are sent to you so both you and the designer or account rep have a record of what was discussed. We all like to say we have a pretty good memory, but over the time of a packaging design project, it’s funny how much I can forget and what I do remember. That’s why ongoing reports and emails keep all parties in the know of what’s been discussed and what’s expected.
