The Quest for Social Justice: Hope for a Brighter Tomorrow

The Quest for Social Justice: Hope for a Brighter Tomorrow

Two years ago, the world was shocked by the live transmission of George Floyd’s killing at the hands of some police officers in the US, sparking the largest and most unified quest for social justice in the world.?

It was so horrific and graphic that ethnic groups came together and marched together for social justice.?

Organizations decided to enhance policies and cultures to become more diverse, inclusive & equitable.?

Governments started to pay attention to their policies and the distribution of wealth and knowledge.?

People in positions of authority started to consider diversity training for themselves and their staff.?

Today, despite the guilty verdict of the police officer, many black lives are still being lost to police brutality in Canada, the US and all over the world due to racism and discrimination.?

A recent report about the shooting of Black people by the police in the US indicates that at least 1,068 people have been killed by police since the death of George Floyd.

Proportionally, the number is not different in Canada, with a jaw-dropping increase in the incarceration of Black people in Canada – about four times the percentage of their population.

But, as Martin Luther King Jr. affirmed in his acceptance speech for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964, There is Hope for a Brighter Tomorrow.

“I was struck by his presence, enthusiasm and the electricity he brought to the room. He walks and manages a fine line of being inspirational, provocative, humorous, passionate and purely entertaining. His experiences and wisdom are evident in his remarks. He compliments you and challenges you in the same sentence. He takes you on a journey of emotions that invokes laughter, deep thinking, reflection, and pride, and leaves you wanting more.” – Mark Cummings, President/CEO, Scotia Bank Life Insurance

PART OF MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. ACCEPTANCE SPEECH FOR THE NOBEL PEACE PRIZE IN 1964

I refuse to accept despair as the final response to the ambiguities of history.??

I refuse to accept the idea that the ‘isness’ of man’s present nature makes him morally incapable of reaching up for the eternal “oughtness” that forever confronts him.

I refuse to accept the idea that man is mere flotsam and jetsom in the river of life, unable to influence the unfolding events which surround him.??

I refuse to accept the view that mankind is so tragically bound to the starless midnight of racism and war that the bright daybreak of peace and brotherhood can never become a reality.?

I refuse to accept the cynical notion that nation after nation must spiral down a militaristic stairway into the hell of thermonuclear destruction.??

I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word in reality.?This is why right temporarily defeated is stronger than evil triumphant.

I believe that even amid today’s mortar bursts and whining bullets, there is still hope for a brighter tomorrow.?

I believe that wounded justice, lying prostrate on the blood-flowing streets of our nations, can be lifted from this dust of shame to reign supreme among the children of men.??

BREAKING NEWS IN THE EQUITY, DIVERSITY & INCLUSION WORLD

Excerpt from CNN

Karine Jean-Pierre will become the new White House press secretary when Jen Psaki departs her role next week, President Joe Biden announced in a statement Thursday, becoming the first Black and out LGBTQ person to hold the position.

Jean-Pierre currently serves as the White House's principal deputy press secretary.

"Karine not only brings the experience, talent and integrity needed for this difficult job, but she will continue to lead the way in communicating about the work of the Biden-Harris Administration on behalf of the American people," Biden said in a statement, adding that "Jen Psaki has set the standard for returning decency, respect and decorum to the White House Briefing Room."

According to Nosakhare Alex Ihama, the Executive Director of the Canadian Congress, “It was high time a person of African descent assume this instrumental role in the White House, considering that the building and establishment in DC were built on the back of African slaves.

We don’t just wish Karine Jean-Pierre well, we know she will do well despite the pitiable disrespectful attitude that the racist opposition demonstrated in the nomination hearing of the now Supreme Court Judge, Ketanji Brown Jackson.

At the Canadian Congress, we are committed to advocating for social justice worldwide and promoting events like this to encourage everyone about the slow, gradual but promising progress to appreciate and recognize the value of Black people all over the world.”

These are some of the critical conversations we will be having at the George Floyd Memorial Lecture – the sensitive conversations that must continue until we are all free from inequitable justice are:

1) Strategic changes in societal and corporate systems, culture, policies, and management to advance the cause for social justice.

2) The impact of George Floyd’s murder on the status quo in the power blocs of Canada and all nations.?

3) Some of the judicial, academic, economic, corporate, religious, social, and societal changes to protect historically oppressed people in Canada and around the globe.

4) How we got here as a people and how can we move forward as a people regardless of our ethnicity.

5) Some of the strategic, spiritual, systematic, and social solutions to eliminate systemic racism and other social justice issues so that Black and Indigenous People can breathe.

6) How to rally together to stand up for social justice and the protection of Black Lives from undue killings.

7) Tips, tools and techniques to deal with racialized and prejudicial thoughts based on the fear of being among peers, neighbourhoods and people who do not look, talk, think, pray, or love as you do.

8)The path to the overdue Recognition, Justice, and Development of People of African descent, in line with the three pillars of the International Decade of People of African descent.
