A Quest to Preserve Digital Spaces for Latine Voters

Meet the Firebird at the Frontlines of Domain Investing Advocacy

For multicultural citizens contributing to shaping our democracy, protecting digital land—and information environments is an imperative defense act that can combat the inception of misinformation.

Every year, about 1.4 million Hispanics in the U.S. become eligible to vote. According to Pew Research, Latinos are projected to account for 14.7% of all eligible voters in November 2024, a new high.

Hispanic eligible voters tend to be younger than eligible voters overall. Only 33% of Latino eligible voters are ages 50 and older, compared with 48% of all U.S. eligible voters.

In preparation for the 2024 voting season, Janice Torres-Perez of The Brand Phoenix preserved key web domain names geared to the Latine voter by taking them off the internet auction block—yanking sites from the reach of potentially nefarious and anonymous entities preying on data to create a divide.

The titles available through her Domain Phoenix extension include Latine.vote, LatineVote.org, LatineVote.com, LatineVote2024.com, Latines.us and others.

With the stewardship of these online estates, she plans to donate some to vetted non-partisan organizations aligned with good nature towards U.S. Hispanic voters.

The Domain Phoenix is the digital investing and advocacy extension preserving Latine sites for the 2024 voter season.

Youth voters are increasingly absorbing identifiers like Latinx and Latine into their lexicons as alternatives to Latino (Latina/Latino) and Hispanic. Latine can also be expressed in plural forms. It's appreciated as a more easily pronounced describer than Latinx.

Torres received training at PeaceTech Lab, an organization started at the International Institute of Peace, which creates framework to stop the spread of violence and misinformation online.

"We're preserving digital spaces for the deserving," says Janice Torres-Prerez, founder of The Brand Phoenix. "I call it D.I.A., which stands for Digital Investing Advocacy, a play of the word Day, in Spanish," she added.

Capitalism drives the domain industry, but?The Brand Phoenix?hopes to serve as an agent for equity. The group encourages people and purpose-driven organizations to avoid leaving their digital spaces unattended.

"X", "E", or any other letter of any alphabet will serve the same interest of further dividing Latino/@s into smaller groups. Gendered pronouns, in Spanish, have never excluded anyone. However, if it is your prefwrence not to be included you alienate yourself. Congrats on your first published article.
