The Quest for Excellence

"Exploring Japan's Pursuit of Perfection and Recruitment Excellence"

If you have ever has the chance to visit or learn about Japan, you will already know it is a captivating nation steeped in a distinctly diverse and rich culture, our Managing Partner Michelle Ansell was lucky enough to visit the country a few years ago and found herself captivated by its stark contrast to Western life. The allure of Japan's traditions and historical tapestry, including the mystique of Geisha, the valour of the Samurai, the enchanting bamboo forests, the efficiency of the Bullet Trains and the majesty of Mount Fuji, gripped her imagination. Yet, what truly stood out was the nation's unwavering pursuit of perfection and the masterful dedication displayed across various professions and arts.

For instance, the precision exhibited in Japan's train infrastructure, the record-holding number of 3-star Michelin restaurants, and the astonishing absence of litter underscored the country's commitment to excellence. Among the most striking examples is the arduous journey of a Maiko, a Geisha apprentice, who dedicates five years of her life to ascend to the status of a Geiko. Throughout this transformative period, technology, such as television and social media, remains out of reach. The Maiko receives no monetary compensation, relying instead on a sense of honor and duty to uphold and preserve these cherished traditions. This spirit of apprenticeship isn't unique to Geisha alone—a Sushi Chef, for instance, will labor as an apprentice for five years, guided by a master itamae, before undertaking the pivotal role of preparing sushi.

Shifting focus to the Western hemisphere brings us to the realm of recruitment and Michelle's pursuit of excellence. An industry often shrouded in criticism, at times rightfully so. The allure of substantial earnings and interpersonal interactions initially draws many to the field, but inadequate management, insufficient training, and unprofessional conduct drive just as many away. However, akin to any other profession, achieving greatness demands substantial time and experience; Malcolm Gladwell's bestseller "Outliers" famously advocates for 10,000 hours, equivalent to 6 to 10 years, as the threshold for mastery.

The lessons of mastery and dedication resounded with Miles Jennings' perspective in "Why Recruiting Looks Easy." He references the story of a wealthy Chinese man who commissions a painting of his beloved horse, only to wait years without a result. When the painter finally delivers, it takes just the span of 20 heartbeats to craft a masterpiece. The realization dawns that the artist's proficiency was honed through years of practice, culminating in that seemingly effortless creation.

While many may perceive recruiting as a straightforward endeavor, the truth is that only a handful achieve long-lasting success. Those who do dedicate their professional lives to becoming the best in their specialised domains. As we strive for excellence, time emerges as a sagacious teacher. The words of Fred Astaire ring true: "If it doesn't look easy, it is that we have not tried hard enough yet." True expertise is a product of time invested.

If your quest is to collaborate with a proficient recruiter, diligent research is key. Seek an expert, a specialist, an individual who has meticulously honed their craft. Inquire into their track record with similar roles or individuals. While we may not be Geisha, some of us have dedicated years to mastering our craft and take profound pride in delivering impeccable service.

100% agree! I made a point of working in Japan for 16 months in order to immerse myself in the culture. What a great experience. The standard of living is very high and yet so different from the West. Therefore, it was very intriguing to learn how to do many things in different ways from what I was used to. A very energizing experience!
