The Quest for Equity
What women in your life have inspired your growth or impacted the trajectory of your life? I’m lucky to have a long list – both professionally and personally. As we celebrate Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day on March 8, this year’s theme – Embrace Equity – is one that I’m proud to champion. And I’m proud to work for a company that does as well.
Merck has a rich legacy of scientific advancements – many of them made by women – that have changed the course of history. Today, we continue to explore ways we can remove barriers to cultivate meaningful opportunities for all people in the workforce. While promoting equality is about giving people equal opportunities, advocating for equity is different. It’s about consciously considering individuals’ unique circumstances and then adapting accordingly to best support their needs. As Dr. Brene Brown summarized it so well, “Worthiness doesn’t have prerequisites.” Acknowledging that the playing field isn’t always level is critical for sustained progress.
To contribute to that progress, at Merck Animal Health, we prioritize elevating women’s contributions to champion the ongoing evolution of the workforce. Within our company, we have a long list of female leaders who continue to better our business through the example they set for us each day. I continue to be inspired by the female leadership team of our North American business - Christine Royal, DVM , Tara Rowe , Jennifer M Bermudez , Alice Bertholin Rice , J'Nate Souvenir, CSCP, CLP , Laura Guy , Giulia Dimarzo – to name only a few who are making waves in our business.

Within our own walls, our company sponsors The Women’s Network – an Employee Business Resource Group – that drives gender parity and provides opportunities to grow our professional skillsets. Outside of our company, we partner with organizations like the American Veterinary Medical Association to promote wellbeing amongst a female-dominated veterinary workforce. We sponsor the Art of the Cowgirl to encourage cowgirls’ contributions to the western lifestyle.?And each year, we celebrate female leaders who make substantial contributions to the greater animal health industry through the Feather in Her Cap Award.
Through it all, I recognize common traits that the most influential female leaders tend to possess – a pioneering spirit, a desire to make an impact for the greater good, and a willingness to lift others up along the way. So, here's to all the women who are trailblazing in their own ways and empowering all they cross paths with to do the same – we’re better off because of you. Keep doing what you’re doing. In our quest for equity, it matters.
