Quest App Advent Calendar: Dec 11th: Microsoft Mesh
It's Monday again, so we are kicking off the work week with a hotly anticipated work & collaboration app from our friends at Microsoft!
Microsoft Mesh allows people to work and collaborate together in immersive environments using Meta Quest headsets and with people who are using traditional laptops and mobile devices. With the rise of hybrid work and video conferencing, we're all too familiar with the shortcomings of current solutions. One of VR's superpowers is it makes you feel like you're in the same room with others, even though you are hundreds of miles apart. Features like spatial audio, gestures and reactions make this possible and help bridge the gaps in communication and understanding that are traditionally found with video conferencing.
What's even more interesting is the platform approach that Microsoft are taking to Mesh, by including no-code editor tools to allow for basic customization of environments and plugins for Unity that allow full control of 3D interactions, data connectivity and enterprise-grade security and privacy.
As someone who has been personally involved in this project, I wanted to say a heartfelt congrats to our friends in the Microsoft Mesh team and congrats on the amazing progress so far!
Microsoft Mesh is rolling out in General Availability in January. In the meantime, you can preview the experience by following the instructions on this blog post.
