Queries with spatial constraints
I'm trying to get home this weekend, going from Long Island to Charlotte. I want to drive halfway there and stop for the night. I prompted the GPTs with this query:
What hotels that are halfway between Syosset NY and Charlotte NC have a studio with 2 queen beds, allow large dogs, and have a kitchen in the room? Include the distance from Syosset and the distance to Charlotte from the hotel. Give the average guest rating.
Google Bard responded with:
Here are the hotels that are halfway between Syosset, NY and Charlotte, NC that have a studio with 2 queen beds, allow large dogs, and have a kitchen in the room:
Courtyard by Marriott Greensboro/High Point
High Point is 593 miles from Syosset and 75 miles from Charlotte. Which Google Bard knows, if you ask it separately for distance from Syosset to High Point and distance from High Point to Charlotte. It is not solving for the midpoint constraint and it is incorrectly calculating the distances between cities in a multi-city query.
Bing Chat responded with:
Home2 Suites By Hilton Charlotte Piper Glen?is located in Charlotte, which is about?600 miles?from Syosset.
This response ignored the midpoint constraint completely. The driving distance from Syosset to Charlotte is actually around 668 miles. Flying it might be 603 miles. GPT should guess from the context that I am driving, and give appropriate distances.
Conclusion: The GPTs do not have the training or functional architecture adequate to give reliable answers to queries involving spatial reasoning on multiple points.

1 年That solution isn't all bad. After 593 miles you will really appreciate a room that meets your other constraints and it is definitely far better than a solution that parked you 75 miles from Syosset and expected you to drive 593 miles the next day. When I drove back from Pittsburgh after the CMU graduation. Apple estimated my arrival in NYC at 9:45PM. In reality, I met a delay of at least five hours at the Holland Tunnel and Apple canceled my trip instructions.
