The Queen Of Typography

The Queen Of Typography

Paula Scher is a world-renowned graphic designer, artist, and educator. Unless you study graphic design, you probably have not heard of her before. You have certainly seen her work, along with the artists and designers who have emulated her styles. Some of the companies she’s worked with include Coca-Cola, Citi, Shake Shack, Disney, and The Public Theater in NYC.?

Early in her life Paula recognized her passion for art and knew she would be an artist. While studying in college she happened to take an intro class for graphic design, and that class changed the trajectory of her career and her life.?

While working as a graphic designer Paula became interested in typography (the fonts used in advertising) and studied everything she could about styles, placement, and design of typography. Her new passion for typography became her expertise and would ultimately help her land a job at Pentagram and eventually become the first woman partner at the company. And Pentagram is not your average company– it’s the world’s largest and most respected independent design consulting firm…just read her bio on the Pentagram website,

“Paula Scher is one of the most influential graphic designers in the world. Described as the “master conjurer of the instantly familiar,” Scher straddles the line between pop culture and fine art in her work. Iconic, smart, and accessible, her images have entered into the American vernacular.”

Who would have imagined expertise in typography, amongst tremendous skill and vision as a graphic designer–I do not mean to downplay Paula’s talent as a graphic designer, would have led Paula to “success” in her career and living her authentic life.

A specialty in letters.?

If Paula Scher can follow her passion for art, discover graphic design, and rise to be one of the most influential graphic designers in the world thanks to her vision with typography then the unique interest you’ve held back from pursuing could certainly be your guide to your authentic life.

See you tomorrow and keep pursuing,

JC

Note: There is so much more to Paula’s story and if you’re interested in hearing more or learning more about the intention behind the typography of your favorite brands, there is a documentary on Netflix called Abstract: The Art of Design with an episode focused on Paula’s career and success.
