Queen of Hearts - Gamification Way of Coaching & Transformation

Queen of Hearts - Gamification Way of Coaching & Transformation

One of the challenges I faced in my coaching journey was to identify and determine the right Coaching Strategy based on the team dynamics at play. As we all are aware, each individual in our teams has got a unique set of emotions, priorities and they exhibit unique behaviour patterns and personalities. As a Coach, it is important for me to identify these patterns and come up with a Coaching strategy for implementation & execution.

Based on the numerous coaching sessions and experiences, I have come up with an interesting tool leveraging the Gamification way. This involves using a standard deck of Playing cards.

I have personally applied this technique and have found it to be quite effective in helping me identify the likely coaching style & stance to be adapted. Let us understand this game in detail

Let the Game Start... We need to separate out all the Picture / Court cards out of a Standard Playing card deck

Each picture card represents a role in our enterprise / teams played by team members as represented in the picture below

Each Suit card represents a personality and behavior style exhibited by the member belonging to that suit . There are 4 suits Hearts, Club, Spade & Diamond. Each of them has a unique personality styles as displayed in the below picture

A team comprises of suit cards and picture cards and when we go into a team for coaching, we end up having one of the many combinations of (4 Suit X 4 Picture cards). This throws up an interesting set of personality and roles at play and for we as coaches it is sometimes becomes very difficult to figure out an apt coaching strategy.

I have just tried to explain 1 combination out of multiple such combinations which can exist

Combination 1 :

  • Senior Management - Driven by number
  • Project Leadership / Delivery : Emotional , Possess Human Sense
  • Scrum Master : Direct & Blunt
  • Product Owner : Hard Working but overwhelmed with work

As a Coach I need to come out with my Coaching blueprint to coach, mentor & guide the different team members in this team and steer them towards an Agile Way of Working.

Do reach out to me for your views on this unique game designed by me and will be happy to hear your feedback on the same.

Note : You can change the personality styles / roles for the Suit & picture cards to get more interesting results..
