Que Sera Sera..!

I wrote an article on "Whether your business will remain in 2016?" Thought, let's reflect.

Premises is very much valid. Look around you. World is changing, and it is changing so fast. 2017 major stories included "Retail Meltdown", where in more and more consumers are making groceries purchases by smartphones. This surely hurt Walmart while it does good for Amazon. Bitcoin boom was eye catching but it’s not legal.

2018 is full of ups and downs with US tariffs, Bexits etc. Also there is clear trend where in all small businesses are thriving. Big businesses which are less nimble and flexible are coming down. There were couple of giants in India who tumbled down eg RCOM, JET Airways, DHFL etc. GE was leading the fall on US bourses. Average business lifespan is reducing mainly driven by technology.

Innovation driven "thought leadership" is the new mantra. Question is what future holds for us. I see four mega trends.

1. Population : Rate of pace is much higher and consumes all limited resources. We are 7.7 Bn people as per 2019 data and we are growing at 1.09% per annum. The current average population increases at 82Mn per year!!!

2. Pollution : Derivative of one. this will drive clean tech demand multi-fold in coming years. We have already crossed threshold and we are seeing repercussions. Heatwaves, Ice-melting at much higher rate this summer are few indications. This will drive countries to take remedial measures which will give hard push to EV market. This transition is hapening now with petrol car sales going down and will not wait till 2030 as predicted before. Economic demographics will change with gulf countries loosing their shine. Digital Energy management companies will thrive, happy to be part of one (Schneider Eletric).  

3. Extinction: This is derivative of two. With CO2 increasing in the atmosphere, it pollutes sea. Enough is written on it already as to how it will destroy ecology. With lakes & wells also getting polluted, clean drinking water will become scarce. Lot of things are going around on this topic including RWH and govts taking steps to make it compulsory for houses built on even 30x40sqft sites. This is just beginning. Technology and topology will have to play role here. How can we have efficient and effective desalination of sea water to get continuous supply. How can we connect rivers.     

4. More Digital: AI(artificial intelligence) and ML(machine learning) will rule the world. All key innovations will revolve around this two. How we work will change. Type of job profiles will change. Working hours will go away. Lot of repetitive jobs will become obsolete. Only niche and strategic jobs will remain. Lifestyle will change. I will not be surprised if we have one Robot per family to begin with leading to “robot per person” as personal assistant or servant. Similar to smart phones today.  Personal hoverboards, driverless cars will be reality soon. Frenchman flying across English Channel on a hoverboard this week is a testimony. Multiple countries are performing trials around flying drone cars, NEC; Japan did one yesterday.

Que sera sera.. whatever will be ...will be !
