Quarterly Newsletter 2: Mental Health & Wellness Awareness
Author: Gifty Parker | Co-Author: Jenani Selvakkumaran
Mental Health is a state of well-being in which an individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively, and can contribute to his or her community. According to the Centre for Workplace Mental Health, misperceptions, fears of social consequences, discomfort associated with talking about these issues with others, and discrimination all tend to keep people silent.
The absence of mental health is mental illness—Mental health problems can affect our thinking, mood, and behavior. Mental illness can occur for a short time, and some occur over an ongoing time period. These are real and diagnosable health conditions that affect and are affected by the functioning of the brain.
Mental illness may be detrimental to a person, as it impacts happiness, productivity, and collaboration. Mental health issues may affect companies in the form of Turnover, Absenteeism, Poor employee performance, Employee substance abuse, Work-related accidents, Workplace violence, or harassment.

Personal Responsibility and Mental Health
Increasingly, the duty of care for one's mental health is placed on others within the individual's life or on society as a whole.
An overwhelming 67 percent of the employees we spoke to believe their employer is responsible for supporting their mental health and well-being at work.
Do you take responsibility for your actions? Do you pass the blame on to others? Taking personal responsibility is crucial for our mental health.
You must take personal responsibility. You ALONE can change yourself. That is something you are in charge of—Your well-being.
Employer actions to support mental health
Leaders' responsibilities may include monitoring employee well-being and mental health needs, examining benefits, and ensuring that treatment of mental illness is immediate and timely. Identifying issues proactively and resolving them, supporting employees who face mental health problems, and creating pleasant workplaces in collaboration with managers, employees, unions, and health experts are some actions that employers should take.
The duty of care for one’s mental health
Increasingly, the duty of care for one’s mental health is placed on others within the individual’s life or on society as a whole. According to Kirsty Miller in her article on The Importance of Taking Personal Responsibility for One’s Mental Health, this action absolves the individual from responsibility for their own psychological well-being while placing the individual in a vulnerable and powerless position. Miller further suggests the need to appreciate the importance of taking control of our minds and owning our thoughts and behavior in order to be psychologically healthy.

The battle against mental health stigma
To define “stigma” in behavioral health, we draw on the definition adopted from 麦肯锡 's 2021 Quarterly article that describes this term as a level of shame, prejudice, or discrimination toward people with mental health conditions. This article further emphasizes the need to identify behavioral-health conditions and the offering the necessary support for employees affected and places this as a top C-suite priority. In this newsletter,, we emphasize the priority as shared — shared amongst all stakeholders.
Stigma prevents people from reaching out at a time when they are at their most vulnerable and most in need of help. Making this a shared priority ensures every stakeholder can tap into the opportunity to address stigma, which further provides immediate action.
