Quarter Of Americans View Gold As Best Long-Term Investment

According to the latest?Gallup?Poll in USA gold is catching up to real estate as the best long-term investment.

The survey was conducted between April 3 and April 25, 2023 and sampled 1,013 American adults at random. The poll has been running every year in April as part of the Economy and Personal Finance survey since 2011.

Survey Results

The view that gold is the best long-term investment jumped from 15% in 2022 to 26% this year — the highest levels since 2012. Gold has overtaken stocks as the second-most preferred investment and came close to the number one spot which is still held by real estate at 34%.

This echoes World Gold Council data on US bar and coin investment. In their latest issue of?Gold Demand Trends?they reported that US investors bought 36 tonnes of gold bars and coins in Q1 this year, up sharply on the previous quarter.

Why Was Gold Viewed As A Good Long-Term Investment?

“Gold tends to be the beneficiary when confidence levels in both real estate and stocks are down. This is typically during times of economic recession or uncertainty, as happened around the time of the Great Recession, and is happening again today,” Gallup said. World Gold Council?research has shown a keen recognition of gold’s long-term value proposition and safe haven attributes in the US, with around two thirds of investors agreeing that ‘gold is a good safeguard against periods of political and economic uncertainty’ and that ‘the price of gold increases over time’.

It’s likely that the relative performance of gold and stocks over the past 12-18 months was a key influence on the survey responses, with gold outshining the gloomy performance of US stocks.

All in all, the survey results point towards Americans being familiar with gold’s potential as a long-term store of wealth. This is valuable at a time when there would seem to be few, if any, reliable safe-havens offering the potential for long-term returns.
