QuantumScape, the solid-state battery partner of Volkswagen Group, recently announced in its third-quarter report that it has begun small-scale production of its first batch of B samples of anode-free solid-state lithium metal batteries, QSE-5 B, which is an important milestone in the company's development progress in 2024.
The QSE-5 B sample lithium metal solid-state battery cell will be QuantumScape's first commercial solid-state battery prototype with a capacity of 5Ah. These solid-state batteries are now being produced and delivered on a small scale for testing by customers in the automotive industry.
Volkswagen is likely to be one of the first automakers to receive QSE-5 B samples. Volkswagen has invested in the company since 2012 and is currently working with QuantumScape through its battery subsidiary PowerCo.
QuantumScape said in its third-quarter report that QSE-5 represents an important milestone for the company and the entire battery industry. "To our knowledge, these batteries are the first anode-free solid-state lithium metal battery designs ever produced for automotive applications," and said that this battery can provide excellent performance in energy density, discharge power, charging speed, low temperature performance and safety at the same time. However, QuantumScape also stated that it will conduct extensive testing on this product, "which will take several months." In addition, indicators such as battery reliability, yield and equipment production efficiency must be greatly improved.

It is reported that as QuantumScape's first commercially available all-solid-state lithium metal battery product, the QSE-5 B battery cell has a size of 84.5mm x 65.6mm x 4.6mm, a capacity of 5Ah, an energy density of 844Wh/L or 301Wh/kg, a discharge rate of up to 10C, and a charge from 10% to 80% in about 15 minutes at 45℃. In addition, the battery also has good low-temperature performance and can work at a low temperature of -30℃.
