Role of Atoms in Quantum Computing:
- Qubits Realization: Atoms, ions, or even superconducting circuits can act as qubits. Trapped ions, in particular, are popular qubit candidates.
- State Superposition: An atom's electron can exist in a superposition of energy levels, allowing it to represent multiple states simultaneously.
- Entanglement: Atoms can be entangled such that the state of one atom instantly influences the state of another, no matter the distance. This property is critical for quantum computing's parallelism.
Example:
- Trapped Ion Qubits: Individual ions are trapped using electromagnetic fields in a vacuum. Laser pulses are used to manipulate the electron states of these ions, allowing them to perform quantum operations.
