Quantum-safe cybersecurity in 2022: What to expect?

One month into 2022 and the activity on quantum technologies is definitely not slowing down. The White House and the World Economic Forum have released two documents in recently that are setting the tone for some of the advances we will see in 2022 related to the transition to quantum-safe cybersecurity.

The White House published on January 19, 2022 a memorandum on “Improving the Cybersecurity of National Security, DoD, and Intelligence Community Systems”. A presidential action that is giving 180 days to identify all instances of encryption not in compliance with the NSA-approved Quantum Resistant Algorithms. Those systems not in compliance will need to get a waiver or exception now, and a plan to transition to quantum-resistant.?

Similarly, the World Economic Forum has published a report titled “Quantum Computing Governance Principles”. They list a variety of?Themes and a set of principles underpinning the core values towards responsible use and transparency in quantum technologies, among others. In Theme #6 on Cybersecurity, they specifically list an action on “Enabling quantum-native telecom infrastructures using quantum random number generators (QRNG) and quantum key distribution (QKD) protocols, quantum memories and quantum repeaters”.

The migration to quantum-safe cybersecurity is no doubt a core priority for global corporations and governments today. A priority seeking long-term security in networks and communications, and a priority seeking as well the wide-spread access to future-proven security and privacy for everyone. In 2022, we will surely see:

  1. The publication of selected standards by NIST (potentially within on month or two)
  2. How corporations and governments pilot and adopt new quantum-safe solutions?to complement?today’s security systems, with multiple examples already available in the public domain.
  3. How vendors launch new quantum-safe products & solutions for upgrading current infrastructure as well as for new deployments.

How are you planning and budgeting for the quantum-safe transition?
