A quantum leap in Quantum Computing

Going by news reports, IBM and 谷歌 are funding the 美国芝加哥大学 and the 日本东京大学 towards quantum-computing research, in what is a US-Japan collaboration to counter the growing threat of China’s tech progression. China is unflinchingly focused on quantum computing, besides working on mission-critical military applications for #cryptology and #weaponry

IBM has committed $100 million to the two universities to build a quantum-centric supercomputer comprising 100,000 qubits, the quantum equivalent of bits in a conventional digital computer, unlike digital bits that are either zero or one, qubits store information in a quantum state, which is a mix of zero and one. Google is contributing $50 million to the two universities as part of a long-term research partnership.

  • The coming era is likely to see competition hitting up in this prime area for addressing formidable challenges beyond the capability of classical computers, like modeling drug molecule interaction with body proteins and making batteries work at an atomic scale
  • Quantum computers are known to invoke the counterintuitive principles of quantum mechanics, for instance, the notion that an object’s position can be defined only after someone looks at it
