Quantum Computing How to Guide for CIO/CTO

Yes it is a new new technology and a bit weird and again it will change the world like the many others in five decades.

I will share a "How to guide based on experiences for Chief Information / Technology Officers".

I am an Industrial Engineer and working in multinational organizations and deploying business solutions for different industries around the world.

In Artificial Intelligence World Algorithm and techniques developed faster than hardware and we are just waiting these powerful CPU/GPU/TPUs public available last three decades. I have met with Artificial Intelligence by 1994 and my professor was the NATO Scientific Lead at that time. We have used some special hardwares for my BSs Industrial Engineering graduation project and got results around 4 hours and now those devices will not be public next 20 years.

Now at 2024 everyone AI expert and every company has its own Generative AI solutions. It sounds great for business.

While I am working at Unilever the most popular place at Singapore for me was "Center for Quantum Technologies" and I regularly visit and talk with professors to understand this new disruptive technology. So by 2008 my new focus area is Quantum Computing. I have always asked same question "What Quantum computing may bring for Business?".

Hence I am not a Quantum Physicist and as Richard Feyman mentioned "nobody understand quantum physics fully even me or my students" I try to read more and more about Quantum Dynamics and try to match with Business expectations and Business Problems.

Quantum Computing is a good place for science, collective-mind, collective engineering and state funding developments. Last five years several types Quantum Hardwares delivered and we able to touch and test them.

I also worked with Apple Business Solutions Services in several aspects in different countries and they are not popular like their hardwares Iphones, Ipads, Airpods etc. And for personal and business use Apple Hardwares the most georgious and competent devices. There are lots of ready to use apps in Apple store so for personal and business use we are not focusing on custom developed business solutions.

For the Quantum Computing hardware, yes these devices are entirely different from your existing computer, phones, laptops, smarttvs, cloud hpc , everything. Classical CPUs based on electron gates (1 and 0) and works with SUM command.

Quantum hardwares works with Quantum Mechanics and it has three state 1,0 and 1-0(superposition). Quantum Computing Processors works based on Possibility not SUM. But as a business managers you need to aware all these creepy thing You just need to know this new technology requires new

-Algorithm

-Data Preparation,conversion, progression

-calculation

-Backconversion to classical data

-Integration with classical CPUs and classical Data

expertises.

To be honest it is not easy to identify your industry your organization and your processes deserve a Quantum Computing Touch.

This critical question is about are you a follower or risk taker / leader/ pioneer?. What is the first electronic market on internet? Amazon. What is the first web page indexer? Google.

If you are the first / pioneer you will define the rules/ standards. Till apple deploy Siri and Amazon deploy Alexa business not focusued on Artificial Intelligence. With the end users, customers experience with AI engines they requested similar solutions at Business and to be honest Business still far behind the personal usage of AI.

To start a Quantum Computing Business Solutions Project in your organizations here is the recipe;

Step 1: If you have Digital Twin you are lucky one.

Step 2: Industry 4.0 / Digital Manufacturing Intelligence /Manufacturing Execution Systems

Step 3: Data Science, Data Excellence Teams/Operations, Artificial Intelligence Solutions/teams/Operations

Step 4: Innovation, Business Process Excellence Teams/Operations

Step 5: Finding an expert to help your organization for Quantum Computing Journey

Step 6: Not stick a Quantum Hardware focus on a dockerized/ container solutions (hardware agnostic Quantum Business Solutions should be your objective)

Step 7: Give minimum 18 months to any Proof Of Concept

Step 8: Focused on People (talents) not companies.

I have delivered Quantum Computing Projects in Banks, Manufacturing Companies, Airlines, Holdings. So keep in mind;

There are different Quantum Hardwares working based on different quantum mechanics/dynamics. D-Wave, IQM, Alpine, IBM, IONQ, Rigetti etc.

Yes there are some Quantum Computers working in room temperature and you can put in a regular Datacenter (e.g. Alpine QT) and there are some others requires Hydrogen based cooling and special physical conditioned datacenters (e.g. D-Wave, IBM, IQM etc). During your PoC focuse on accessing these quantum hardwares via subscription /cloud services. when you prove the value than you may consider to make an investment.

And the final one Quantum computing programming is not a rocket science. You can easily get trainings for your own programming team experienced in Java, C#, Phyton or any programming language.
