Quantity or Quality: Which Leads to Perfection?

Which side are you on—quantity or quality? But what if the answer isn’t as simple as choosing one over the other? Let’s explore this through a compelling story from a ceramic class.

The Experiment:

In a ceramic class, the teacher divided the students into two groups:

• Group 1: Evaluated based on the quality of a single pot.
• Group 2: Judged on the number of pots they produced.

Group 1 focused on crafting a single perfect pot. They spent considerable time planning and obsessing over every detail, aiming for perfection.

Group 2 concentrated on making as many pots as possible. They made countless mistakes but learned from each one, improving with every new pot.

The Results:

On the evaluation day, something surprising happened. The highest quality pots came from Group 2, the quantity-focused group. How did this happen?

The Lesson:

Group 2’s emphasis on quantity led to a greater learning curve. By creating many pots, they made mistakes, learned from them, and continuously improved. Their relentless practice resulted in higher quality output.
