The Quality of Your Life

The Quality of Your Life

“In all of living, have much fun and laughter. Life is to be enjoyed, not just endured."

?Gordon B Hinckley

I am not big on new year’s resolutions, but I did have an epiphany just after the start of this new year.

?I asked myself “What makes a high-quality life?”

Is it making a lot of money? Is it having a flashy car or expensive possessions? Is it having a big job title? Is it starting your own family? Is it overcoming the challenges that life inevitably throws at you?

?

As I ponder these thoughts, I’ve noticed there are people who spend a disproportionate amount of time on things in their life. Maybe its their job, maybe it’s a hobby, binge-watching TV, or surfing social media.? I wonder how you can put any single part of your life on a pedestal to the detriment of all the other parts and expect a balanced, fulfilling personal life?

?

For example, climbing the corporate ladder doesn’t keep you warm at night. How would it when all you can think about and focus your energy on is getting to the next rung on the ladder? I have learned many things in my career and 2 of the most powerful things are:

  1. Life and business are team sports – you need (good) people on your team.
  2. Relationships are the currency of life and business.

One way to building relationships is to constantly meet new people. While work is not exactly the ideal place to make friends, you can still make friends at work. However, there are so many other ways to meet new people.

?

Get some hobbies. For me, serving on my local engineering board, being apart of 3 toastmasters club with all of the people I meet and all the fun I have, from travelling the world and taking a break from my life by becoming a mountain climber, a discoverer of my heritage, an explorer of ancient lands, consumer of new foods, maker of new foods, and attaining mastery on how to feel great are just some of the things that bring me joy.

?

Strong relationships, hobbies, and self discovery are the essence of a fulfilling life.

?

Let me give you an example: After I finished work yesterday, I planned my day to engage in my favorite hobbies: The first is making and eating food. It was so much fun to plan my menu for this week: double smoked bacon and scrambled eggs for breakfast, yummy tuna salad and grilled chicken sandwiches for lunch, and beef fajitas for dinner. During that time when I was in the kitchen preparing, or out in the backyard grilling chicken my brother called, my mother called, and my aunt called, and I got to build relationships with them just by chatting with them and having a conversation about our days.

?

It’s a unique feeling to be around people who know you very well because they have known you your entire life. ?After I finished eating dinner and cleaning up, I went upstairs to write this post and reflect on what I find to be a high-quality life (self-discovery). I then finished up the night by going to my local gym and taking a sauna session where I got to sweat, detoxify, and meditate on what my ideal self and lifestyle. This was followed by an ice cold shower and a massage chair session. I slept like a baby that night!!!

?

I call those Mondays.

?

I encourage you to ask yourself what defines the quality of life for you. And remember, once you get on this journey of making the most high-quality life for yourself, things will change for you in a good way. Be more comfortable with change as part of your self discovery practices and know that excitement lies in not knowing what comes next…..It’s all part of the fun!!

?

Life is a journey not a destination. Focus on the present moment, the quality of your experiences and the value of character rather than the future, the quantity of achievements, and the matters of sensation.
