Quality Over Quantity: Achieving More with Less

It's often said that you become the company you keep, and there's a lot of truth to that statement, especially when it comes to investing, dating, and trusted friendships. As someone who likes to learn a lot from my elders, I can confidently say that by taking a page out of my very dear friend and former boss Roy Liebenthal's book and focusing on quality over quantity. Roy was a man ahead of his time as the visionary founder of NYC hotspots Cafe Tabac, Lemon and POP Burger, and while his Woodmere Long Island accent was thick, his words of wisdom with his baritone voice were burned deep in my brain. "Kid, it's better to own the shittiest house on the best block than the best house on the shittiest block," he once told me. Although he was talking about real estate, his wise advice applies to so many aspects of life. Roy taught me everything he knew about art and how to fully appreciate and buy the quality works of artists like Warhol, Basquiat, Haring, Hirst, and Richard Prince. He always told me prioritizing quality over quantity is key, even if you can't afford it at the time. This holds true whether you're investing in startups, dating, or making friends. In life, we're often faced with the decision of whether to choose quantity over quality.

Let's start with consumer VC investing. It can be tempting to invest in as many startups as possible, hoping that one will be the next big thing, using the spray and pray method. However, research shows that investing in quality over quantity is the smarter choice. A study from Harvard Business School found that a concentrated portfolio of high-quality startups outperformed a more diversified portfolio by a significant margin. In fact, the top 1% of venture capital firms generated 40% of all venture returns, proving that quality really does matter.

When it comes to the oftentimes awful world of dating, the same principle applies. While it may seem like dating as many people as possible gives you a better chance of finding "the one," research shows that being more selective is the way to go. A study published in the journal Social Psychological and Personality Science found that those who dated fewer people but had a deeper connection with each person were more likely to be satisfied in their long-term relationships. In other words, quality over quantity leads to a better chance of finding a meaningful, long-lasting relationship.

And what about our trusted friendships? With social media allowing us to amass thousands of "friends" with just the click of a button, it can be easy to fall into the trap of valuing quantity over quality. However, research shows that having a smaller group of close, meaningful relationships is more beneficial for our well-being. A study from the University of Oxford found that having a few close friends is more important for our happiness and emotional well-being than having a larger network of acquaintances.

So, what does all of this mean for us as a society in general? Choosing quality over quantity can lead to a more fulfilling and successful life. By focusing on the things that truly matter and cultivating meaningful relationships, we can experience greater happiness, success, and overall well-being.

Of course, there are downsides to choosing quality over quantity as well. It may require more effort and time to find high-quality options, whether it's in investments, dating, or friendships. And, at times, it can be difficult to let go of a larger network or spinning the wheel of fortune.

It's a no brainer, the benefits outweigh the downsides. By prioritizing quality, we can create a life that is rich in meaningful experiences, relationships, and opportunities. So, the next time you're faced with the choice of quantity vs. quality, remember the science and make the only choice worthwhile.

As investors, we all want to strike gold with our investments. But in the faster than the speed of light world of consumer venture capital (VC), is it better to cast a wide net and invest in many startups, or should we focus on quality over quantity? Here are five scientific benefits and downsides to consider when choosing to invest in quality over quantity:

Benefits:

  1. Higher success rates Investing in high-quality companies increases your chances of success. According to the National Bureau of Economic Research, only 4% of VC-backed startups generate returns that exceed the average public market equivalent. However, investors who focus on high-quality companies have a 65% greater chance of success.
  2. Better Returns high-quality companies can lead to better returns. Research from Stanford University found that a concentrated portfolio of high-quality companies outperformed a diversified portfolio by 4.4% per year. By focusing on quality over quantity, investors can see higher returns and avoid the risk of diluting their portfolio with low-quality investments.
  3. Long-term Stability high-quality companies are more likely to have sustainable business models and long-term stability. A study of 2,000 companies by the Harvard Business Review found that high-quality companies outperformed their peers in terms of revenue growth and profitability over a 10-year period. By investing in high-quality companies, investors can benefit from long-term stability and growth.
  4. Access to Top Talent high-quality companies are more likely to attract top talent, which can lead to a competitive advantage. A study by McKinsey & Company found that high-performing companies are 25% more likely to attract top talent. By investing in high-quality companies, investors can benefit from access to top talent and the resulting competitive advantage.
  5. Brand Recognition Investing in high-quality companies can lead to brand recognition and social proof. Consumers are more likely to trust and buy from companies that have a strong reputation. By investing in high-quality companies with a strong brand, investors can benefit from the social proof of a successful investment.

Downsides:

  1. Limited Opportunities focusing on quality over quantity may limit investment opportunities. According to a study by CB Insights, only 0.14% of startups are able to raise funding from top VCs. By limiting investment opportunities to high-quality companies, investors may miss out on potential high-growth opportunities.
  2. High Valuations high-quality companies often have high valuations, which can limit potential returns. According to a study by PitchBook, the median valuation for VC-backed companies in the US has nearly tripled since 2009. By investing in high-quality companies with high valuations, investors may see lower returns than expected.
  3. Concentrated risk Investing in a concentrated portfolio of high-quality companies can also lead to concentrated risk. If one of the investments fails, it can have a significant impact on the overall portfolio. By diversifying investments, investors can mitigate risk and avoid potential losses.
  4. Increased Due Diligence Investing in high-quality companies requires more due diligence. Investors need to conduct thorough research and analysis to identify the best companies to invest in. By focusing on quality over quantity, investors need to spend more time and resources on due diligence, which can be time-consuming and costly.
  5. High Stakes Investing in high-quality companies comes with high stakes. If the company fails, it can result in significant losses for the investor. By investing in high-quality companies, investors need to be prepared to take on more risk in exchange for potentially higher returns.

Choosing quality over quantity in consumer VC investing can lead to higher success rates, better returns and long term value to investors

And then there was love, the eternal search for that one special person who makes your heart race and your brain over think. But how do we find our soul mate? Some say the key is to date as many people as possible, while others advocate for a more selective approach. Let's explore why choosing quality over quantity in dating is the way to go.

Let's start with the benefits:

  1. More meaningful connections studies have shown that people who prioritize quality over quantity in their dating lives tend to form more meaningful connections with their partners. According to a study published in the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships, individuals who focus on forming deeper connections report higher levels of relationship satisfaction.
  2. Better communication when you're dating fewer people, you have more time and energy to invest in each relationship. This means you can focus on improving communication with your partner, which is essential for building a healthy and lasting relationship. A study by the Gottman Institute found that couples who communicate effectively are less likely to divorce.
  3. Less stress dating can be stressful, and juggling multiple partners only compounds the stress. Choosing quality over quantity means you can focus on building strong relationships with people you genuinely enjoy spending time with. This can lead to less stress and anxiety in your dating life.
  4. Improved self-awareness when you're not constantly searching for the next date, you have more time to reflect on what you want in a relationship. This can lead to greater self-awareness and a clearer idea of the type of person who will make you happy.
  5. More satisfying sex life research has shown that individuals who are in committed, high-quality relationships tend to have more satisfying sex lives. A study by the University of Chicago found that individuals who reported higher relationship quality also reported higher levels of sexual satisfaction.

Now let's take a look at the downsides:

  1. Limited options when you're only dating a few people at a time, your pool of potential partners is naturally smaller. This means you may have fewer options when it comes to finding a compatible match.
  2. Fear of missing out with so many dating apps and websites out there, it can be tempting to keep swiping in search of the "perfect" match. Choosing quality over quantity means acknowledging that there may be other great matches out there, but you're content with the connections you've made.
  3. Less spontaneity when you're focusing on a smaller number of relationships, you may feel like you're missing out on the excitement and spontaneity of dating. But remember, the tradeoff is more meaningful connections with people you truly care about.
  4. Pressure to make it work when you're only dating a few people, there may be a sense of pressure to make each relationship work. This can be intimidating and lead to settling for someone who may not be the best fit for you.
  5. Longer time to find a match choosing quality over quantity may mean it takes longer to find a compatible partner. However, the tradeoff is finding someone who is truly right for you and worth the wait.

While it may be tempting to shoot a lot of shots and date as many people as possible, the true benefits of choosing quality over quantity in dating are clear. By focusing on forming deeper connections with a smaller number of people, you can build much more meaningful relationships, reduce stress, and ultimately find greater satisfaction and stimulation in your love life.

Lastly the dreaded universe of social media that allows us to amass thousands of "friends" with just the click of a button, in this world of unreality it's so easy to fall into the trap of valuing quantity over quality when it comes to our friendships. But is having a large circle of acquaintances really better than cultivating a handful of close, meaningful relationships? I DON'T THINK SO

Here are the top 5 scientific benefits and downsides to consider when choosing quality over quantity in your friendships:

Benefits:

  1. Increased happiness: Studies show that people with close, quality friendships are happier than those with a larger network of weaker connections. One study found that people with just one close friend were more likely to report being happy than those with many acquaintances.
  2. Improved mental health: Strong, meaningful friendships can help alleviate symptoms of depression, anxiety, and other mental health conditions. A study published in the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships found that people with more satisfying friendships reported better mental health overall.
  3. Longer lifespan: Believe it or not, having quality friendships can actually extend your lifespan. One study found that people with strong social connections had a 50% greater chance of living longer than those with weaker social ties.
  4. Increased resilience: When you have quality friendships, you have a support system to help you through tough times. Studies show that people with strong social support are more resilient in the face of adversity.
  5. Greater sense of belonging: Having close friendships can give you a sense of belonging and connectedness, which can improve your overall sense of well-being. A study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology found that people with close friendships had a greater sense of belonging than those without.

Downsides:

  1. Limited social network: When you focus on quality over quantity, you may have a smaller social network overall. This can limit your access to new experiences, perspectives, and opportunities.
  2. Higher expectations: When you have close friendships, you may have higher expectations for those relationships. This can put more pressure on your friendships and make it harder to maintain them over time.
  3. Greater vulnerability: When you invest in close friendships, you are opening yourself up to greater vulnerability. This can be a risk, as your close friends have the potential to hurt or disappoint you.
  4. Potential for conflict: When you have close friendships, there is a greater potential for conflict. Disagreements or misunderstandings can be more intense when the relationship is more meaningful.
  5. Difficulty finding the right fit: When you prioritize quality over quantity in your friendships, it can be harder to find the right fit. Not everyone will be a good match for a close friendship, and it can take time and effort to build those relationships.

In the end, the decision to prioritize quality over quantity in your friendships is a personal one.

First of all, I want to acknowledge the fact that you took the time to lay out a very thorough analysis of both pros and cons relative to the eternal questions around quality vs quantity. This is a very important topic that deserves a nuanced inquiry during a time of perpetual TLDR attention spans. It’s interesting to look at the ways in which VC (and hopefully conscious capitalism) actually looks for “Quality quantity” with regard to scale and ROI. If an LP demands 10X on a fund, it can be very tempting to forgo the longterm QAQC of a company, in the name of growth and multiples. Founders have to be fully committed turning down funding if the know that the pursestrings are conditional on them compromising quality for the sake of volume. But finding ways to maintain “Quality quantity” is where true opportunity to innovate and disrupt exists….in fact, it’s the only way to aggressively generate returns AND ensure that your impact does no harm to employees, society and the environment.
