Quality of life in cities: sustainability ??

Episode 2:??????? ???? ???????????? ?????????????? ???????????? ???? ?????????????????? ?? ???????? ?????????????????????? ???????????

In an increasingly contaminated world, being aware of air quality is often problematic. Thanks to IoT technology, key parameters can be monitored so we can take action.

Which applications should be monitored in the city?

?? Here we show you some applications that your city could be monitored if it will be smart :)

  • Air Quality in cities
  • Acoustic and Noise levels (dBA)
  • Waste Management: Obtain high-quality service to increase citizens’ well-being
  • Traffic Congestion & Parking Management to avoid loss of time searching for a parking spot.
  • Buildings: Monitoring and management systems
  • Irrigation at parks and green areas

Technology that cares: We face Climate-change through IoT

The integration of technology in cities makes them more livable and sustainable.?By combining innovation and citizen awareness we manage to improve the quality of life in cities, be more efficient and profitable, increase revenue through better functioning of public infrastructure and improve sustainability and compliance with environmental legislation.

While environmental pollution has been reduced by legislation and measures, noise pollution has only increased. For example, during the day, Mumbai and London can experience an average of 105 dB, while Tokyo and Chicago can easily reach 95 dB.

Air quality as a human right

The air in Earth's atmosphere is a mixture of gases. Mainly, nitrogen (78%) and oxygen (21%),but also water vapor (~1%), argon (0.93%) or carbon dioxide (0.041%).

By 2050, outdoor air pollution (particulate matter and ground-level ozone) is predicted to become the leading cause of environment-related deaths worldwide.

For the last two centuries, human activities have emitted harmful substances for the environment?(plants, animals, humans, climate, etc). The five main air pollutants for our health are Particulate Matter (PM1 / PM2.5 / PM10), Nitiric Dioxide (NO2), Ozone (O3), Sulfur Dioxide (SO2) and Carbone Monoxide (CO). In addition, Carbon Dioxide (CO2) is directly linked to global warming (or Climate Change).

IoT technology can measure these gases in order to make Public Administrations and Private Companies aware of this big problem and take action.

Climate change worsens > Data transparency > Lower risks for society > Competitive cities

Take care of the environment around us.?

If the city you live in were a Smart City it must comply with the 5 Rs of sustainability:

  1. Reduce
  2. Re-use
  3. Repair(able)
  4. Refurbish(able)
  5. Recycle
