Quality Inspection Report for Electronic Components

Insights from White Horse Laboratories, August 2023

In the landscape of electronic components testing, understanding the prevalent trends and industry shifts is imperative. White Horse Laboratories' continuous endeavor in providing comprehensive assessments shines a light on such trends.

In August 2023, White Horse Laboratories observed a notable increase in Mosfet (Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor Field-Effect Transistor) component testing, constituting 8.4% of the total evaluations conducted. Mosfets are essential in electronic circuits due to their compact design and are used extensively in both core and integrated circuit designs. The benefits of lower input current, higher input impedance, and greater gain with minimal power consumption make them a preferred choice for various digital and analog circuit applications.

Following Mosfets, MCUs (Micro Controller Units), FPGAs, and diodes were the other significant components tested. MCUs represent a reduction in central processor frequency and specification, integrating peripheral interfaces like memory, counters, USB, A/D conversion, UART, PLC, DMA, and even LCD driving circuits on a single chip, making them adaptable for different control applications.

The brand distribution in the tested components shows that nearly 10% were from Texas Instruments (TI), followed by familiar names such as ON Semiconductor, STMicroelectronics, and Infineon. Japanese brand Murata Manufacturing, known for its ceramic capacitors, constituted 3.5% of the tested components, showcasing a positive market traction during this period.

An interesting discovery was the appearance of Panasonic among the brands in our testing data. Although overshadowed by giants like Samsung in the semiconductor arena, Panasonic has a rich history in electronics. Having entered the semiconductor industry in 1952 and achieving a position among the top ten global semiconductor companies by 1990, its trajectory changed post-2019 when its semiconductor business was sold off, marking its exit from this sector.

The results from August's testing revealed that 86.7% of the evaluations yielded acceptable outcomes, with less than 10% deemed unacceptable. A detailed examination protocol ensured that most components passed the visual, X-ray, and anatomical tests. However, 3.9% of the samples required further testing to reach definitive conclusions.

The functional test failure rate was slightly higher, reaching over 30%, which is uncommon and may attribute to random variables. While most samples passed the tests, the instances of failure and need for further testing highlight the importance of stringent quality control measures to minimize potential risks.

This quality report from White Horse Laboratories provides a glimpse into the current electronic components market scenario. The data from August 2023 serves as a useful resource for industry professionals, aiming to keep the community updated on market trends and quality assurance aspects. Stay tuned for our subsequent reports for more insights into the electronics component landscape.
