???? Greetings and happy New Year!
Do you find that pertinent, timely and interesting articles are getting harder to find... despite the abundance of posts, content, and constant notifications?
I fear stuff is being drowned out by the billions of content pieces that appear every day.
Has anyone ever advised you to post on social media at least xx times a day to get your business heard?
Well I am here to tell you... STOP! You do not need to post every day.
In a world where you can get ChatGPT (or some other bot) to spew out content in seconds, it's easy to be prolific. You can even ask ChatGPT to suggest the next 150 topics to write about... and many of them will be fine. Probably bland as hell, and I've never generated anything that I would call insightful.
So that kind of content becomes irrelevant white noise. If you are OK with that, then it's an easy life for you. But I suggest the future for the brighter humans out there is to consider the substance.
Time is valuable: people do not want to read boring shite (that's defiantly not a Chat GPT kinda word!).

I was reflecting on why I want people to spend a minute or two reading some bit of content, and it boils down to this:
1?? Trustworthiness: I try to be authentic. I hope that has value, and that by crafting a few paragraphs of content I can build the foundations for trust.
2?? Demonstrates Expertise: My hope is that a considered discourse establishes Digital Islands as being authoritative, hopefully demonstrating our understanding of small businesses and the people who own them, and the challenges we all face.
3?? A pathway for engagement: I've learnt that thoughtful content lingers. People mention it months later - on a Zoom call or when you meet them for real. It prompts authentic engagement.
4?? Less is more: (Wise words from the architect Mies van der Rohe). My hope for 2024 is that by crafting fewer, yet more thoughtful posts, time can be focused more efficiently on what is important (yours and mine).
In the past I have been guilty of trying to feed the quantity monster and haven't invested sufficient time and effort in the quality of content. I want that to change in 2024.
I invite you to share your reflections and experiences in the comments – have you managed to elevate what you do and what you say so that it rises above the malaise (or should that be molasses)? ??

1 年Thanks Gavin. I'd like to hear from you about this.......this being the fact that, aside from all the boring s****, there's so much good stuff from various people on this 'channel', how do we get to those who are in our core target group?

1 年Completely agree that in a world where anyone can generate bland and boring posts with the help of bots, it takes more effort and skill to craft something meaningful and memorable. As a fan of jazz music, I'm reminded of Miles Davis and Bill Evans, who revolutionised jazz with their modal approach. They showed that less is more, that simplicity can be profound, and that silence can be as expressive as sound. Their masterpiece, Kind of Blue, is widely regarded as one of the best albums of all time, not because of how much they played, but because of how well they played whilst creating 'space'. I could listen to that album every day and never tire of it. Look forward to your future posts. ??
