In recent years, teachers have faced unprecedented challenges, being not only responsible for their students' academic growth but also their social and emotional well-being. The COVID-19 pandemic, climate crises, and global conflicts have added to their burdens. Despite their efforts, many teachers feel they are not doing enough for their students. So, what do students really need?
?
Research in social-emotional learning (SEL) shows that when students have supportive relationships with their teachers, they experience better well-being and academic success. This holds true even for middle and high school students. But what makes a teacher caring and supportive? While there's no clear consensus, recent studies suggest that the most effective teachers are calm, clear, and kind.
?
Students themselves value these qualities in their teachers. In a study, we asked sixth- and seventh-grade students what makes a caring teacher. Their responses highlighted the importance of teachers being calm, clear, and kind.
?
"Calm in body" refers to a teacher's ability to remain composed and manage stress, creating a calm environment for students. Students appreciate teachers who explain things patiently and create a peaceful atmosphere.
?
"Clear in mind" involves being present, attentive, and responsive to students' needs. Students value teachers who explain concepts well, listen actively, and manage their classrooms effectively.
?
"Kind in heart" goes beyond niceness; it's about showing compassion, understanding, and empathy. Students want teachers who are friendly, warm, and willing to help, both academically and personally.
?
While these qualities may seem simple, they can be challenging to embody consistently, especially during stressful times. However, they not only benefit students but also support teacher well-being. As educators navigate these turbulent times, embodying calmness, clarity, and kindness can make a significant difference in students' lives.
