Qualities Of A High-Value Consultant

Qualities Of A High-Value Consultant

Recently, we launched our annual Junior Program, aimed at developing Identity and Access Management consultants into well-rounded professionals while guiding them on a path of continual improvement.

During our first meeting, one of the new members asked, "What does it mean to be a good consultant, and what should I focus on learning?" Having been in consulting for over two decades, this is a question I have often pondered, and my answer has evolved with my experience.

It's universally agreed that a solid understanding of the industry is essential for any consultant, along with a certain level of knowledge and experience. However, lacking experience doesn't preclude one from being a good consultant, as expertise comes with training, practice, and time.

What truly matters are the qualities that don't necessarily come from years on the job but are intrinsic to us as individuals.

Embrace the inevitability of making mistakes; they are invaluable learning opportunities that pave the way for growth. Cultivate an insatiable hunger for knowledge and improvement, continuously seeking to learn adjacent skills that can complement and enhance your core expertise. Adopt a mindset of saying yes to new challenges, as these experiences broaden your horizons and build versatility. Never stop asking why; understanding the root cause of issues helps in crafting effective solutions and provides deeper insights into the client's needs.

Understanding the business need is crucial; it allows you to align your strategies with the client's objectives, ensuring your recommendations are relevant and impactful. Be accountable for your actions and decisions, demonstrating reliability and integrity in all interactions. Celebrate the successes of others, fostering a positive and collaborative environment. Maintain visibility within your network and client base, showcasing your contributions and staying top-of-mind. Finally, strive to think like a CEO, making strategic decisions and considering the broader implications of your advice.

If asked again, I would define a consultant who can deliver exceptional value and drive meaningful change for their clients, employer, and co-workers by these qualities.
