The qualitative research evolution, new tools for automated marginalised language inclusion, and kudos to Clear Global!
Hello,
Welcome to our August newsletter!
This month, we spotlight the qualitative research revolution transforming humanitarian support.
In humanitarian work, understanding the needs of vulnerable communities is vital. Traditionally focused on quantitative data, the sector is now embracing a revolution in qualitative research, driven by digital advancements that make it faster, easier, and more accessible. Technology is breaking down barriers, making qualitative research an essential tool for gaining deeper insights and shaping impactful strategies.
Learn how qualitative research is now a vital component of humanitarian strategy, and keeping pace with quantitative timelines.
Transcribing and translating marginalised languages is challenging. Nigeria alone has over 500 languages, and limited digital data hinders AI model development. Yet, technologies like Google Cloud’s Chirp are making significant strides. Using self-supervised learning across 100+ languages, Chirp delivers 98% accuracy in English and most excitingly, is making fast progress with marginalised languages - already showing a 300% improvement in translation accuracy. We are following Chirp closely, so watch this space for more updates.
We can’t talk about advancements in marginalised language inclusivity without applauding Clear Global for relentlessly leading the way in breaking language barriers in humanitarian crises. From their Language Data Initiative to the Rohingya Phrasebook, their efforts to ensure marginalised voices are heard, drives huge progress in making the sector’s support more inclusive and effective.
