One of the primary challenges faced by the sector lies in integrating the Manaus Free Trade Zone, the largest industrial area in the region, with the rest of the country. The capital of Amazonas has only one land connection with Roraima, while the waterway infrastructure is inadequate, leaving air transport as the only viable option for low-volume, high-value-added products. The main land route connecting Manaus to the rest of the country, the BR-319, lacks pavement over a 500 km stretch and has been reclaimed by the forest, making it a dangerous and impractical route for transportation.

Last year, we experienced one of the worst droughts in the state, which had a global impact on our region, leading to the anticipation of collective vacations due to a lack of production inputs. International ships were unable to dock at the Port of Manaus and had to remain stranded at ports along the route, such as in Panama.

Is it worthwhile to transport cargo by air in this case? No! The cost of air freight for high-volume cargo with added value is not justified. The alternative is to transport cargo by barges between Manaus and the Vila do Conde port in Barcarena, Pará, where ships are transferring the cargo.
